  • Erm, cancel the direct debit?
  • Is it a Direct debit? If then you should be able to cancel it yourself if you have online banking - it'll be on there. But it sounds like its being done as a a card transaction if the bank are saying they cant do anything. Also is there a ref number next to the AOL payment on your statement ?- if there is then this is the info AOL can use to trace it, thats going by what i used to be able to do when i worked for a well known home ins company.

go to your online bank, and print off the statement your self.

Just a thought with no promises.
Have you tried “losing” your debit card? Report it lost and have it cancelled and get a new one.
If whoever is taking your money is using your card details they will no longer have the correct 3 digit security code

I have an HSBC bank account, and my debit card has had the same 3 digit security cards since I opened the account in Feb 1998.

yes but if you report a card stolen/lost, they will give you a new card with a new security code. And the expiry date will be different too which will help.

Just say you can't find it and are really worried you might have left it at the supermarket/pub/wherever so ask them to cancel it and reissue it.

After that get straight onto AOL. If it's them that are debiting your card then they should stop blaming someone else. If it's someone doing it on behalf of them then they should be able to tell you exactly who.

Complain to the ombudsmen if you run out of other ideas.

I cannot see how the banks can say it's not their problem? Surely if you report it as fraudolent transaction they have to act on it??

What do you mean by that? So is it a DD? The answer is not clear. If it is debit card payment then you can report the transaction as fraudolent.
