Anyone been to Key West in Florida?

Will be in Orlando for 3 weeks this April and would like to get down to Key West. What's it like? Any suggestions of somewhere to stay down there for a night?

Thanks

Key west is lovely make sure you have some lime pie (yumm)

i went about 3 years ago and stayed in the comfort in, it was on the outskirts but the place isnt very big so easy to drive in for an evening, would recommend getting somewhere nearer to the town centre though.

on your drive down you will pass the everglades, we took a detour in there and the drive from Miami seemed to take ages, but key west was lovely.

It's a long drive down a (mostly) single lane road. It will take you about 4 hours if not more from Orlando.

Accomodation is really pricy and can be maxed out due to festivals, events etc so you need to check what's on.

The place is OK for a day out, just to see the various (gay) bars and the evening revelry.

    Have fun

We gave up cos the drive was so long and tedious. Have met others who thought it was not worth it. Can recommend Fort Myers Beach. Lovely place with good beaches etc.
  • Beautiful place - Hemingway style - cruise ship port - nice little tram rides - although drive far too long just for a few days or even with children - we go to Sarasota instead you can't beat the beach!

    Thanks for the replies

I'm guessing it's the sort of place that you should go to at least once..... and we'd like to do it this time

It was a long drive, but I enjoyed it (10 years ago). You'll find accomodation is cheaper in Marathon or Islamorada. The sea is beautiful. The sunset on Key west was a real event.

Snorkeling at the John Pennecamp underwater parks is one of my favourite memories. It's near Key Largo. You need to be reasonably fit and a good swimmer, or they do full diving and glass bottom boats out to the reef too.

    That's what we did.

We were staying in Ft Myers (nice place as NafUk has said) did the very long drive and return in ONE day!

Needs a bit of planning to avoid the traffic- can get backed up across the bridges.

We did not stay, but watched the sunset and left soon afterwards.

With regards to accomodation some hotels participate in Priceline but the quality can be a bit dodgy.

I'd advise a look on Tripadvisor for likely hotels.

Key West will take you about 9 hours from Orlando.
Key Marathon is well worth a stop off and a visit to theatre of the sea is a must do the swim with the dolphins as to be booked well in adavce. Marathon is a very good place to break up your journey its juts before the 7 mile bridge. Have as many stops as you can because each of the Keys is worth seeing and most get missed on the way to KW, Duck Key is tiny and very tropical.
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel
