Kitchen aids

I really want to eat better, if I could I'd love to use fresh fruit and veg, it'd be cheaper and healthier than all the processed rubbish I eat now.

The problem is I'm disabled and just peeling a potato leaves me in agony for days. Does anyone know of a gadget out there that can peel veg, slice, grate etc? And that doesn't cost hundreds (I'd be asking for it as an xmas present).

Any tips would be great, and apologies if this is the wrong place.

I'd have to vote for a Kenwood chef with a potato peeler and grater/slicer attachment.

You can pick these up second hand on ebay or like my actual mixer which was free from freecycle.

Mind you the actual mixer is VERY heavy in itself, but once you have a location for it you don't need to move the body of the mixer.

There is a kenwood thread somewhere here:T

The potato peeler attachment for the Kenwood is quite expensive (£30 plus p&p) to buy new...I know because I bought one....It's also very noisy to use...especially peeling shed loads of potatoes for the hoardes here. It's quite effective though. I've got a couple of spare bowls for mine secondhand, but never seen any of the other attachments.....

Do you have anyone that would peel and chop a whole batch for you, then maybe part boil and freeze so there all prepared for you and you just have to finish cooking in the oven.

I find all the disabled tools I use not very easy to handle and am lucky that OH is here to do it all.

Do you get any help around the home via the council? You can get help to help you prepare meals etc.

I don't get any help from the council, I was all set up for direct payments then had to quit uni. As I don't have to go out I don't have to get washed or dressed, and if I have to spend all day preparing a meal then so what, I've nothing else to do. That's their attitude anyway. Don't have any close friends either, although I'm trying to adjust my debt repayments so there's enough left of my DLA to pay for help.

I'll look into the Kenwood thing, although my kitchen's tiny with no workspaces so I'm not sure how useful it'll be.

    Thanks for the ideas!

ames, i dont usually peel my potatoes, as all the goodness is under the skin would you be able to give them a bit of a scrub then boil them, the potatoes from the supermarket are not that dirty, i have a cheap food processor that has an attachment that will slice and grate

Feeling a bit silly now, it didn't occur to me to leave the skin on even though if I have baked tatie the skin's the best bit! Can I do the same with carrots and other veg? I'm planning on looking into organic veg boxes, so I don't know what veg it'll be every week.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

if you are going to have organic veg, you could leave the skin on carrots just give them a wash not sure about veg like turnips and parsnips etc

A member of my family is registered disabled and has got some great kitchen gadgets. I don't know about peeling veggies and that but he has a sort of tippy thing (technical term obviously! :D) that the kettle straps into so he doesn't have to lift it when its full of boiling water, an easy to operate auto can opener - that kind of thing. I don't know whether things like that would helpful to you at all (or if you've got them already in which case tell me to stop yapping!;) ) but if so I'll find out where he gets it all from. :)

Have to add that I think that you should be entitled to some sort of help by your council - roughly where abouts in the country are you if you don't mind saying?

I've seen some of the gadgets, a tippy thing wouldn't be that useful cos I only boil a cup at a time and I can manage that. A tin opener would be good though.

I'm in Leeds. I've spoken to social services a few times, they're always helpful till it gets to the people who have to start authorising money to be spent when problems suddenly appear. The most recent one was that they can't give me help till I've seen the ME clinic (because there could be rehabilitiation and they'd have wasted their money). The ME clinic wont see me till I've got my bipolar under control, the psych wont see me till the ME clinic have seen me. To top it all the doctors don't even know if it's ME, they're talking about an immune problem instead...

Besides which, the only help with meals they offer is taking a ready meal out of the freezer, putting it in the microwave and giving it to you. I can manage that but want *gasp* to be able to eat real food.

I've had a look at the Kenwood Chef's on ebay, is there a particular model that's best? I don't want to buy a cheap one and find that I can't get the attachments for it, but I don't want to fork out for one of the dearer ones if a cheap one's just as good.
