Quite a bit of info here, Tiger.....cost of heat pumps....

Ground source heat pumps have been around for quite some time.
However they should really only be considered if you have a nice low energy efficient house, with no forms of air leak, to allow the latent heat to escape.
They are ideal with underfloor heating, but really would struggle to produce any form of decent heating with more traditional forms of heating such as radiators.
If you have enough land then it is cheaper to lay the neccessary outside pipe work for the heat transferance horizontally rather than vertically as drilling downwards is much more expensive then excavating a relativley shallow trench.
I think the price range of £15-20k is probably nearer the mark for this type of job.
I am amazed that the council isnt investing in a district CHP scheme rather than this, but that is a discussion for another day.

Whats a CHP system?Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0

I did that  but still dont get what CHP would mean on a personal level. Most of the info is regarding schools, hospitals etc. What would be involved to for example have this in my 1 bedroomed flat? How would (from what I understand of what I have read) the burning of fuel in my home produce electricity?Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0 -
OK - now you've explained yourself I can help better. Look up "micro CHP" - in particular "Whispergen". These devices burn gas to generate electricity and heat, and are coming rather more slowly to market than predicted, unfortunately. They are very expensive so are only practical for a lot of people on a lease basis (from your energy supplier) - not sure if you can do this yet. Whispergen is used a lot in boats, where there isn't a mains supply and so its expense can be justified more.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

That has probably explained why the council have gone with ground source then. This is a very rural area......only 4 houses here are having this.
There is no mains gas. When the council looked into the best option they not only looked at installation costs and maintainance costs to themselves but also to continued running costs, electricity vs oil vs gas cylinders etc for the tennants. This was deemed to be the best for financial and environmental reasons.
Next financial year they are starting the next phase which is the use of solar panels to supply at least part of the electricity used in their properties.Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0 -
Thats amazing your council is using GSHP's and solar panels, I use oil so am watching everything said with interest.
Tell us whats happening.
Are they installing new heating in your flat as well? ie new underfloor heating.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -

They really are balancing everybodies interests in everything they do. As the properties are all being lived in underfloor heating really wasnt the best way to go, either with regards to disruption to tennants and also the costs of installation. We will have radiators but they will be bigger than what we have for the existing systems.Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0 -
Ground source in Cornwall? Probably works from the radioactivity alone.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
