basically Halifax's overdraft is assessed based on credits to the account. It does not have to be a student loan, but as a student it is presumed that this is the only funds they have
I remember when I was at Uni I used to have my part-time wages paid in (but many fellow students did not work and were lucky to receive parental contribution payments) as well as my student loan - to my student account0 -
Hi I just rang them to extend my overdraft from 1000 to 1300. She said it would get referred and they will contact me in 2days. I think Halifax should advise first clearly that they offer up to 2750 with 1000 as a a start. Hopefully i recieve good news in two days but i think that I have been with them since september 2006 and had to SLC payments and the odd payment in here and there from others.0

Hi everyone. I applied for the Halifax account (I am a second year student) but haven't even been able to open it. They said my credit score was below their threshold for an account with them. This is very confusing as I have no student accounts whatsoever, no credit cards or bad credit history I can think of.
My only overdraft is with Nationwide (£200) and I've never gone over. That and a student loan are the only things I have. Any idea why they might be rejecting my application?0 -

this happend to me as well- i too had no adverse credit history- i think it may depend on the credit scores of people under the same address as you, your postcode and whether you are on the electrol roll- it may be some other reasons as well but these are the only ones the halifax bank guy could tell me at the time0 -
sometimes its catch 22 situation - nothing to assess on credit file in first place so they won't accept you
electorol roll is looked at, yes0 -
Both me and my friend have student accounts with halifax. The other day he went to the city centre branch and asked for his limit to be extended. The woman there asked him a few questions; who much he earns? What year he's going into? etc. She then made a quick phone call and his limit was extended to the maximum amount of £2,750.
So i thought i might as well extend my limit as there was about £100 left on it to avoid being charged if i went over. I went in to the same branch and asked for a £500 extension. I was asked the same questions as my friend the the woman went to the back office and when she returned said she was unable to extend it.
I was left a bit puzzled at how my friend was able to extended his and i wasn't. We both do the same part time job and get paid exactly the same, he's pervious limit was £1,300 and mine was £1,500. The only difference is i am going into my third year and he's going into his second year, which works in my favour but yet i was unable to extend my limit while his was done on the spot. My credit history is spotless and the only reason i can think of why they didn't extend it is that i have a £100 left on my limit an my friend had £350, so they are waiting for me to go over so they can charge me, which during my 2 years with them have never gone over my arranged overdraft.0
