EON heatwise and switching to economy 7

You're right Wolf3, we're phasing out Heatwise meters and the older 3 rate Economy 10 meters. This means we'll no longer be able to replace meters with the same type if there's a fault or when they reach the end of their guaranteed shelf life. Instead, we'll offer a free meter exchange with a choice of a two rate Economy 10, a two rate Economy 7 or a single rate meter.
A two rate Economy 10 is most similar to the old Heatwise/Economy 10 as it's designed for electrical heating systems. Like the meters they're replacing, they give 10 hours of off peak electricity for heating. Also like the older ones, we only have the one tariff available. Unlike the older versions, though, the 10 off peak hours cover all electricity used.
Economy 7 also works with electrical heating systems but there are only 7 off peak hours and these are all at night. There's no 'top ups' in the afternoon and evening should homes start to cool down.
Single rate meters have no off peak hours but day rates are cheaper than our Economy 7/10 prices. These meters are better suited to properties without electrical heating.
There are more tariffs available for single rate/Economy 7 meters both with us and with the other suppliers.
I agree, too, about seeking advice from a qualified electrician before making a choice. To work, Heatwise/Economy 10 meters are wired into the relevant heating/hot water circuits at properties. Changing the meter, particularly if going for single rate/Economy 7, may need some re-wiring. This will depend on the individual set ups at each property. These costs will be down to the customer.
In some cases, not all at the moment, Smart Meters might be available too. Where they are, customers can ask for these if they prefer.
Hope this is of interest.

I've had a letter through today from Eon saying they want to come change my heatwise meter as they are phasing the tariff out, has anyone else had one?
I rang them up and the rates for Economy 10 and 7 are appalling! I currently play 13.21p for my standard electricity and 8.28p for the heatwise element with a standing charge of 15.64p/day. With Economy 10 I can't split out the normal electricity rate from the heating bit so would end up with a day rate of 17.021p and off peak rate of 8.516p for everything, even the standing charge is more at 16.422p/day!
Anyone found a cost effective way out of this? Im keeping the heatwise for now but the rep on the phone seemed to think it was being done away with entirely by the end of the year0 -

Are you sure about this?
As I understand it, Heatwise is a legacy tariff and Eon, as the legacy supplier, are obligated to continue to support it. I am not aware of any change to this requirement on legacy suppliers.
Could it just be that they need to replace your existing meter with a replacement (of a similar type) due to the typical timely replacement of all meters to ensure continued safety and accuracy?0 -

We are phasing out Heatwise meters and we're offering to replace these with an Economy 10 or maybe an Economy 7 meter.
There is the only the one tariff available for Economy 10 meters and this is one you'd have to go on with this sort of set up. The off peak times will be like for like. The other thing is, with the new E10 meters all 10 hours will be off peak for all usage.
Multi rate meters, like Economy 10, are only cost effective if a good proportion of electricity is used during the off peak times. Wherever you can, it’s best to use as much electricity as needed during these times.
You’ll also have the option of a single rate or Economy 7 meter. These, though, may not suit the current heating set up and I’d recommend talking to a qualified electrician before going down this route. There may be some work needed to make sure the heating isn’t affected. Although the meter exchange will still be free, the costs of the electrician is the customer’s responsibility.
There’s a specialist team who look after these type of meter exchanges. I can help get you in contact with them if you'd like me to :)

Can you confirm something for me please. I am currently on heatwise in an all electric home. Is it just my heating and water that is at the cheaper rate or does for example my dishwasher benefit from the lower rate if used during the 10 hours of off-peak supply? I believe it is just the heating/water at the moment that benefits but if I switch to Economy 10 it will be all electricity consumed during the 10 hours off-peak0

It really depends on the type of legacy complex meter, most of these meters have an e7 setup for the standard electricity usage, and then additional rates for the heating / hot water, boost rates and some have used to have weekend rates also
E10 meters work the same as E7 but have a 3hr period in the early afternoon to top up the storage heaters, however i believe the E10 prices are more expensive than the regular E7 rates0 -

Good morning steveraff and welcome to the forums.
It really does all depend on the specific set up of your account and to give you accurate information I'd need to see your meter details etc.
As I say a bit earlier on in the thread, we are actually phasing out heatwise meters and we're offering to replace these with an Economy 10 or maybe an Economy 7 meter.
There's lots of info about this in the thread, but if you need my help specifically, please just ask.

The CMA have covered this in their response (released yesterday)
• A requirement that the approximately 700,000 households on non-Economy 7 restricted meters are allowed to switch to cheaper single-rate tariffs without requiring a meter replacement.0 -
... but I'd very much like the details of the 'specialist team' at EON that is able to assist with Economy 10 customers.
My mother has been trying to understand her tariff for quite some time now and I'm wondering if a smart meter upgrade might be available to her that would provide some visibility into their energy use.
Please let me know how best to get in touch so I can provide specific account details.
Thanks in advance,
Simon0 -
Hello Simon
Has your mother had a letter from us about updating her Economy 10 meter? If she has an older 3 rate meter, we'll be contacting her in the near future about changing this. She'll be offered a choice of a 2 rate Economy 10, 2 rate Economy 7 or a single rate meter (please see Helena's or my earlier posts in this thread).
There'll be a number on the letter about the best team for your mother to contact. If not, drop an email to the address in my Profile and I'll be happy to point her in the right direction.
Hope this helps Simon.
