Winchester is a great place.0

you could take a look at the properties which the Landmark Trust has available - you can search specifically for properties near public transport as well as by region and number of beds, and quite a lot of properties rare in hiostoric cities if you fancy that.
They have a property in Bath which sleeps up to 10 , so you'd all fit with a bit of space to read out if you get on each others nerves!
It's very central.
Bath might be an option in any event - there is a fair amount to do - shopping, Spa treatments at the Themae baths or the new spa hotel, visting the old Roman Baths, the Jane Austen Centre, the costume museum etc, going to the theatre, the are also some pretty good restaurants, and nice parks if you have good weather and fancy walks.
And lots of nice places clsoe by if you get bored.
It's about an hour and a half by train from London - 2 direct trains an hour from Paddington
The drive from Manchester is a bit longer but pretty straightforward as it is simply M6 then M5, or you can get a train (manchester Picc. to Bath Spa, changing at Bristol) which takes about 3 12 hours but is a straightforward journey. Not sure about Merseyside but possibly your paretns could chose to break the jouney somewhere en route if they wanted? Would they be up for spending a day in London and travelling onward with your sister, for example? I think it's about 2 hours by train from Liverpool to London..All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Shrewsbury and Oxford have been mentioned, and Worcester would be another possibility.
All these are historic cities and have river walks.
All these are accessible by train and best explored on foot without a car anyway. As you're only there for the weekend, there is plenty to do without going further afield, though all are surrounded by pleasant countryside.
There is so much to do in Oxford; So much history, Anglo-Saxon tower in the shopping street, colleges, museums, river walks, boat trips, theatres, restaurants, open top bus is best way to get orientated ....
Oxford is expensive; the best way to stay there is at one of the colleges which have vacant rooms out of termtime, so April is good.

In September I spent 4 nights at historic Christchurch College, and had breakfast in the amazing Great Hall, which young folks know as the Harry Potter dining room (as in the films ...)
I see they have rooms available there (suggest Meadows) for the weekend of 8th April, but not other weekends . Less than £100 PER DOUBLE ROOM which is superb value for Central Oxford. I was in another part and actually had 2 rooms, bedroom+ensuite and a study with comfy armchairs and fridge. I think the 2 rooms would be standard student accommodation. Note: not all the colleges are so central or so historic, so read details carefully. Note: fridge was really useful (M&S nearby), but the rooms aren't really geared to self catering (cup, saucer, spoon provided only, sink in ensuite only, no kitchen) so I would take plastic plate and cutlery next time. No TV but who needs that during a weekend in Oxford?
Hope it's an interesting idea that might appeal.
I hope in future to stay at Durham and Salamanca (Spain) through this university rooms scheme!0 -
you asked what there was to do in Nottingham....
Nottingham Castle
Nottingham Caves - really worth doing the tour - see the caves under the city centre
The pub under the castle is built in a cave - again really worth seeing...
The Prison Museum (not the correct name but you can get a joint ticket with the cave tour)
Lots of good restaurants and independent shops...
Lots of central budget hotels - premier inn etc...
Art0 -
What about Warwick beautiful place, lots of museums , the castle, nice places to eat, market ,independant shops etc0

The Very Right Honourable Lady Tarry of the Alphabetty thread-I just love finding bargains and saving moneyI love to travel as much as I can when I canLife has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters0 -
Sorry, not checked this for ages.
I love Bath- but all the family have been their separately recently. This is the frequent challenge- finding somewhere that will work with everyone.
Oxford is an option. Unfortunately we can't do the weekend you suggested, we're looking at the one after.
Chester is on the short-list. We all know it relatively well having grown up in Merseyside, but it is a lovely city.
Warwick is also an option, my partner went to University there but I've never done the castle. What else is there to do?
Nottingham sounds good. Hadn't thought about Winchester and know nothing about it, but will add it to the long-list.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Hopefully my brother and I can agree on somewhere over Christmas.0 -
We have done Coventry and Liverpool with great sucess with older grandchildren. Birmingham not so good.0

Just to update this- we ended up booking Leicester. None of us really know it and we got a good price for the premier inn in the city centre. Hopefully it will be a good choice! Thanks for all the suggestions0
