Salmon loaf with cucumber sauce - YUM! I'm going to do costings later when I've got back home and see how much that will cost with the things I have in already.
I can see this as a lovely chilled summer dish. :D

Gardening is dangerous! I tried to rip open a polythene packet of seeds with my teeth this afternoon and managed to dislodge the only crown I have; so it's the dentist for me first thing tomorrow morning before I frighten the grandchildren.

In the meantime, here's a yummy recipe for blackberry chutney; it was inside a kilner jar I bought.

    Blackberry Chutney

1 tbsp. olive oil, finely chopped red onion, 3cm finely chopped ginger, 2 finely chopped red chillies, a pound of blackberries, 45 grams caster sugar, 30 ml red wine vinegar.

Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan. add the red onion, ginger and chilli. Fry gently for 4-5 minutes until softened. Add blackberries and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring. Add in the sugar and vinegar, mixing well. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Whilst still hot, spoon the chutney into hot, sterilised jars and seal.

    Have a great evening, Everyone.

Viv, I was going to say that Juicy Orange Chicken you gave us is absolutely delicious cold in a salad. We had to have our tea on the go so I took some in a box with rice & green salad and it marvellous.
That will become one of our new summer dishes for sure.

    Evening!

Viv -thanks for the pickle recipes! I may try the lime one....not so sure about the blackberry one, it sounds delicious but any spare blackberries go into a crumble!!!!....do you by any chance have a tried-and-tested recipe for mustard pickle/piccalilli?

It was a quieter day than I expected today...a friend came round to collect the large pile of clothes I have grown (or rather shrunk!) out of...all good stuff but at least 2 sizes too large for me now :)....she has an in-law who is of a larger size and who will gratefully accept the items.

I have a hankering for something rich and creamy...so will make some joghurt tomorrow - turn it into joghurt cheese overnight and on Sunday will spread some thickly onto 2 gingernuts, add a few slices of banana...then the 'secret' - make up a little caramel options with just a little water, keep it thick, add a pinch of salt, and drizzle over the banana....hey presto! a low(ish) fat banana salted-caramel cheesecake treat for one!

As I will be making joghurt I will also pick up a cabbage and make some coleslaw (I have apples carrots and onion already)...I likie to do a joghurt dressing rather than mayo.

Bought a couple of summer vests at M&S a week or so ago....they were on special offer - I am going back tomorrow to see of I can get a couple more....something tells me they will either have sold out of the larger sizes or they will no longer be on special!

Jackie, that's so disappointing about the afternoon tea, hope DD complains. I've got a hen weekend coming up in the next couple of months and we are going for afternoon tea at a posh hotel in Edinburgh - £27 each. It's a ridiculous price for sandwiches and cakes plus then we are going out for fancy meal in the evening  I dread to think how much the weekend will cost altogether:)

Afternoon tea events are such a rip off. I went to a hen do at a fancy hotel which cost £35 for the non-alcoholic option () - they couldn't even find coffee pots to put the coffee in so they put both the tea and the coffee into identical white teapots which resulted in a LOT of unintentional cups of "toffee"! I mean, come on, you're a 4* high-spec hotel with a restaurant, that's a schoolboy error! Maybe it's the coffee snob in me but the rules are simple: NEVER serve instant coffee, don't use too-hot water as it will burn the coffee beans and a tea pot is for tea. If only Alex Pollizzi (the Hotel Inspector) had been there, she'd have had a fit!!

We were served the equivalent of one sandwich each (in triangles) and one mini scone each which came ready made with either jam or cream, not both, and no extra pots of either!

And, to make matters worse for the bride to be, her entire wedding was vintage themed, hence the afternoon tea and 1950s dress code - they didn't even serve the food and drinks on/in vintage china! Everything was white. And very obviously not china.

Back OT, I've finally invested in a new super kingsize duvet since my old one was starting to look a bit ropey and flat after 5 years of being washed. Believe it or not, it's actually cheaper to replace it than get it either laundered or dry cleaned!! (£18 instead of £25-£40) I'm thinking of donating my old one to a dog's home or something since it seems a shame to throw it away into landfill.

I'm also mid-way through my ruthless decluttering and am enjoying the feeling of being able to get at things I need! OH complained that the wardrobe was too dark to see his stuff in so I cleared out the chest of drawers, put all of his stuff in there and moved my stuff into the wardrobe - I don't know why I didn't do it earlier! I now have everything I need for the morning in one handy place - I bought one of those hanging shelf thingys from Ikea a while back and it now holds my work tops, trousers/jeans, underwear, socks and pjs so I'm not scrabbling around each morning/evening in drawers!

Hi again, will look that recipe up for you after the dentists tomorrow, Prinzess. I know I've got one; I've made it several times and it's delicious.

Good morning Make do, mend and minimizers

The sun is smiling amongst the clouds. Bit cold though.

Making do = For dinner we are eating the steak pie from freezer.
Another shoppers tale = x1 pie £3 or x2 for £5. We eat one and put the second in the freezer.
I would have prefered to just buy one @ £2.50.

Mend = OH is doing a very good job of tidying up the garden

Minimize = this morning I have given the x2 drawers under my bed a look over and decluttered a few things into the bin.
Found another environmental shopping bag. A folding one. Put it in my going out bag.
Going to wash x2 plastic boxes and put into use holding a few grandbabies toys for visits. Gets things off the floor.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

I've been decluttering my bedroom and sent a lot of things off to the charity shop this morning. Its time to get this house properly organised and not hang onto too many things if I don't think I'll ever make use of them.
The house is beginning to breathe again.
    [/QUOTE]

That's exactly how I would put it! Even though we only moved here just over a year ago, coming from a 6 bed to a 3 we had lots of 'stuff', even though I thought I had got rid of most of it. Still a way to go but I'll get there.

    My pleasure, Jan. :)

I'm not good at explaining so bear with. :D

First I would go to the page on the web that I wanted to link to eventually. Say for argument sake it was Post One on this thread.

Then I would go up to the address bar on the top of my screen and copy the URL address.

Finally, write your post and highlight the word that you want to make your link. ie ' Post One ' . Click then on the icon directly beneath the emoticon icon. (looks like a globe with two chain links).

A box will appear in the top left hand corner and it allows you to paste in the URL address you copied.
(If it doesn't pop a box up change the editor mode by clicking on the bottom A/A in the right hand corner of your message box. The background of your message box will go white then.)

There will already be 'hhtp' prefilled in but I always delete that for quickness so I can just c & p my address link.

Make sure you click OK after pasting your address and bingo! The words of your link word should now turn blue and we can all click away on it. ;)

    Post One

I hope that helps, Jan. If anyone knows a simpler way of explaining that please feel free to write it up. :)

If you get stuck Jan just ask again and we'll talk you through it but I wasn't so good at explaining how to post photos either. :o

Hello All, back fro the dentists after a load of root canal work which I wasn't expecting, and my tooth temporarily back in place.

As promised, here's the mustard pickle recipe - I think it was from the 'Good Food' magazine 2-3 years ago.

Mustard Pickle - makes approx. 2 large jars

225 grams table salt, 450 grams baby onions or shallots (quartered if shallots), 225 grams cherry tomatoes, 450 grams cauliflower florets, 450 grams cucumber, deseeded and diced, tbsp. capers, 125 grams butter, 25 grams plain flour, 500 ml malt vinegar, 199 grams caster sugar, tbsp. turmeric, two and a half tsp mustard powder,

Dissolve salt in approx. 4 litres of water. Put the onions, tomatoes and cauliflower in a large bowl and cover with salted water. Cover with clingfilm and keep in the fridge or a cool place for 24 hours. Drain the vegetables in a colander and tip them into a large preserving pan or flameproof dish. Add the cucumber and capers and cover with 2 litres of fresh water. Bring to the boil and cook for 10 minutes. Drain the vegetables and tip into a large bowl.

Melt the butter in a saucepan then add the flour and stir well to make a roux. Slowly add the vinegar stirring all the time and cook for a few minutes until thickened. Add the sugar, turmeric and mustard powder and season with black pepper. Pour over the vegetables and stir to combine. Pack into sterilised jars. Leave in the fridge for 5 days before eating so that the vegetables absorb all the mustardy flavours.

Right, my seeds have arrived so am going to have a little gloat over them and try and decide where they are going, but I am most definitely not going to open them with my teeth!

    Viv xx
