Evening All
We should congratulate ourselves we are half way through the month!! One of our number has still not bought anything yet - well done! And Cheerfulness is only half way through her budget!
I have had a lovely evening - treated myself to going out to see Jupiter Ascending film! Got a voucher and so it was only £6!! A great piece of entertainment - Sean Bean acted everyone off the screen and the special effects were awesome!! Not everyone's type of film but I loved it.
The first time i have ever been to the cinema on my own (I am 56!) I was planning to go with a friend and now they cant afford it. I got quite down as I have been looking forward to it for months - and then thought to myself 'no! I have been managing my budget so that I can do this (unlike my friend!) so I ll go on my own!' On my way out I had a very nice conversation with a young man about the film and we compared it to other Sci Fi we had seen - he was so civilised and polite! that's one in the eye for stereo types!
So that was out of my 'Entertainment' budget. Otherwise an NSD for me again. Yeah! :-)
Need to get some making done over the weekend!!Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j
NSDs 2015:185/330 (allowing for hols etc)
LBM: started Jan 2012 - still learning!
Life gives us only lessons and gifts - learn the lesson and it becomes a gift.' from the Bohdavista :j0 -
Got some YS mini baguettes (8 for 50p) on the way home from work - perfect for going with the soup I plan to make tomorrow. OH has requested roast chicken on Sunday so between the leftovers and the soup that will do most of our meals for next week
I've got the weekend off :j so plan to start my HM pillow protectors then. I'm also planning to pop to £land tomorrow to see if I can get some more supplies for making cards.Mortgage 26.4.25 - £108,500 3.6.25 - £107,282.15
Mortgage overpayment savings - £26.63/£50
Mortgage overpayments so far - £3000 -

Real linen improves with age, and, as I think I said before, duvet covers are easy to make as they are basically bags. If you don't like the natural colour they can be easily dyed and/or trimmed with lace/embroidery etc.

Agree about the bed linen. I have been so disappointed for the last few years to find that even Dorma pure cotton is not of the quality it was once.
Agree too about French sheets. They are usually good quality and can often be found absolutely unused. I had a huge linen sheet with enormous monogrammed initials as a curtain when I lived in France. Being pure linen it hung beautifully and on a summer's days would gently billow into the room with the long French windows wide open.0 -
Good Morning, Everyone,
Well done, Lynplatinum, going to the cinema alone! The first year that I was newly single, I was ok for going out in the daytime but used to scuttle home in the evening. However as I mentioned before, I spread my wings and have been all over the place on my own. Keep it up; there are interesting people to meet everywhere.
Littleowl, I can tell you why Dorma is no longer the quality that it once was; the company now belongs, or is affiliated to Dunelm and the quality has been lowered because the prices have been lowered. I have a bedspread from 20+ years ago when Dorma was 'real' which cost £250; it's still like new and washes like a dream. I bought one (kingsize) for my son a couple of years ago and it was round about £110 - of course, there is no comparison in the quality.
Right, off to tackle the lemon curd, will post some recipes later.
Happy Valentine's Day, Everyone.

Back again,
I keep forgetting this one! Invest in a flexible spatula (generally they have a wooden handle and a silicone/rubber? top). You'll never waste anything in bowls/saucepans again.

Lynplatinum - Well done you for 'going it alone' it does take courage to take the plunge but now you've done it & had a good experience you won't mind doing it again.
I second the drop in the quality of so many everyday things - built in obsolesence so we purchase more instead of for life. We have a 'throwaway' society because its in the manufacurers interest as the goal is always about profit. They won't make much profit out of us lot will they!!
Off to bake DH a heart shaped coffee & walnut cake for Valentine's - he probably won't notice anyway - hahaSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
Well my plans are stymied for tonight - the man in my life has only just got home from being offshore, so won't be able to come over until tomorrow at the earliest! Not to worry, you don't have to have a special day to celebrate being together.
Anyway I made the lemon curd and it was very satisfying to stick on a 'home made lemon curd 14:2:2015' label rather than taking it off the supermarket shelf. I don't think it was any cheaper than buying, (how much is lemon curd anyway?) but it does taste wonderful. Downside was that it seemed to take ages to thicken and only made a half litre jar full (plus the little tastes I kept having). Here's the recipe if like me, you don't have a microwave - I hope I'm not treading on anyone's toes here.
Lemon Curd
3 ounces butter,2 large lemons, half a pound of caster sugar, 3 eggs, beaten well. Put all the ingredients into the top of a double saucepan (I used a pudding basin) over just simmering water and stir constantly until mixture thickens. It took about 25 minutes and I kept wandering off doing other little things and had to give it a vigorous stir every time I came back, but boy, does it taste good. I'm thinking it might make rather nice presents.

Happy Valentines day everyone!
I decorated a victoria sponge cake yesterday with pink butter icing and made a ring with those love heart sweets. Looks fab.
I went to take a photo.....and dropped my camera on the kitchen floor :0(
The camera has broken and the shutter will not close. Viewfinder looks blurry.
Husband has kindly said he could not decide what to get my for Valentines day so will buy me a new camera. I just have to do the research online for the one.
I bought him a card and jumper from M&S.The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
