Your reminder of how to test if pearls were real reminded me of a society gossip column many years ago in New York.

A socialite was showing off her huge pearls when a "friend" said she would test them to see if they were real by biting them"

The acid rejoinder was "For that, my dear, you would need real teeth!" :o
    "This site is addictive!"

  • When I was a kiddie I remember that you often saw coins that were bitten but you don't see that anymore now.

Rose, I'm glad your DH is fine now. Such a shock but I'm sure your grandchild is keeping you busy. I know my two little ones do. :)

I think that Lemon Water sounds delicious. I love anything lemony. I drink plain water with lemon juice in often in the summer.

Today I had a lovely breakfast of rhubarb and yogurt followed by two halves of grapefruit. I should have been one but I couldn't resist the other half.
I think I can just eek out the last few tubs of rhubarb in the freezer so mum better be caring for that crown of hers as I need to restock this summer. She's normally thrusting on anyone who calls to off load it.

No time for knitting until later tonight but eager to get going with it. I'll be starting another project this weekend. Homemade drawer organisers. :D

  • Good Evening All, I hope you've had a productive day. Just another quick recipe here as I'm going to try and wheedle my daughter-in-law's chocolate pudding in a slow cooker recipe later(as long as it doesn't interfere with Sewing Bee) it's delicious!

In the meantime, here's a fish pie recipe. White fish is so expensive now but this makes a little go a long way and simple though it is, if you take care in making it, it's the best. The recipe is for 4 but it will stretch further with extra vegetables.

    Fish Pie

A pound of white fish, pint thick white sauce, 4 hard-boiled eggs, 4 ounces grated cheese, 1 tsp dried mustard, salt and pepper, dried, breadcrumbs or mashed potatoes.

First bake the fish in a little water with a bay leaf (20-30 minutes). Drain the fish on to a plate, reserving the cooking water, remove any skin or bones and divide into chunks.

Make white sauce with 2 ounces butter, 2 ounces of flour and the fish stock made up to a pint with milk, stirring until thick. Add salt and pepper to taste then add cheese and mustard and simmer for a few minutes. Remove from heat and stir in fish and chopped hard-boiled eggs (I often put frozen peas in as well). Turn into an ovenproof dish and either sprinkle the top with breadcrumbs or spread a layer of mashed potatoes over it (nicer I think), dot with butter and bake in a moderate oven 180 degrees/gas4 until the top is brown. It's very warming, comforting and filling.

Wish me luck! I'll post it later if I'm successful.

Meritaten, how can you tell if CS pearls are real. I've never had real to my knowledge but wondered if it was the weight or coolness of them?

go and look in jewellers at 'real' pearls. be cheeky and ask to see them and handle them. They will feel cool at first but warm up in your hand. study them - real pearls have a 'lustre' that fake pearls don't. its very subtle but once you know it - you wont mistake cheap fakes for it.
last (don't do this in the jewellers), rub the pearl against your bottom teeth, real pearls feel slightly gritty. fake pearls are completely smooth.
I suppose because my nan had real pearls and I was used to seeing and handling them, I have a bit of a 'sixth sense' about them and can spot fakes a mile away.
I love my pearl necklaces - I don't think my CS finds are particularly valuable - they are definitely 'cultured' and not the madly expensive 'wild pearls!
  • Hello again, Everyone, here's the chocolate pudding recipe as promised:

    Slow Cooker Chocolate Pudding.

2 cups plain flour, 2 cups sugar, three quarters cup of cocoa, 3 eggs, three quarter cup of oil, a cup of milk, a cup of black coffee, one and a half teaspoons baking powder, one and a half teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda.

Grease slow cooker. Mix ingredients in a bowl, pour the mixture into the slow cooker. Cook for two hours with a tea towel under the lid (the tea towel stops moisture).

OK after my rabbiting on yesterday about how we are all sinking into commercialism and living to make our houses perfect i.e. buying stuff we dont need - today I have a perfect example of barter!! My friend came over and had coffee and home-made chocolate shortbread and a warm house and a chat (she's feeling a bit 'down' at the moment - awaiting a decision by 'powers that be' - beyond her control in other words) and in exchange she cut my hair!! She always does it and I cannot think of anything I do for her - I said so to day and she said that I am like a therapist but with added chocolate biscuits/cake/HM truffles etc (she grinned at this point!)

An NSD for me today and also got more charity stuff done plus some of my own paperwork (I run my own business so there is always stuff to do!)

Have copied the slow cooker choccy pud recipe - not that there is any kind of chocolate theme going on here!!! (I used to be addicted to chocolate but I am getting better! Slowly!)
    Have a good day folks.
Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j
NSDs 2015:185/330 (allowing for hols etc)
LBM: started Jan 2012 - still learning!

I think the only real pearls I may have seen in my life were my mum's double strung wedding day pearls which were when I was very little. Wonder what happened to those but not around now as she was reminiscing about them last year.

l love the bartering Lyn. Seems that a similar bit of swapping of skills went on with you and DIL, Viv. Your sewing knowlege and her Chocolate Pudding recipe. What a good exchange. ;)

A relaxing day knitting I think is called for today. Bones are aching and my stomach isn't happy. :( Once I've cleaned the kitchen and written a shopping list for later when DH gets in I think I'll settle myself down on the sofa and catch up on some tv while getting some of this waistcoat done.

Speaking of shopping, yesterday was a NSD so I'll combine it with tonights record as I was so sleepy I forgot last night.

Must try to get to a £ shop tomorrow as I need a couple of supplies to begin my HM drawer organisers. I'm not ruining my kitchen knives on the cutting I'll be needing to do.

Morning All - just caught up with what's going on in everyone's life at the mo.
I've got a broken pearl necklace in a box that was my mum's - I've never really checked them but will do now as I don't think she would have kept a broken string of fakes.
Thanks for the SC rice pudding recipe - did try one before but not that successful & this one looks much better ;)
Watched Sewing Bee last night - glad I didn't have to do the childs waistcoat!!! What a shame you had so much to unpick Cheerful Still havn't unpicked my cushion - I've realised its going to be a major unpick:( Got chaps in at the moment fitting doors between my kitchen & utility room so am making lots of cups of coffee - may start on the unpicking as its something I can put down easily
    Have a good day everyone

  • Good Morning Everyone,

I did even better on the 'barter', Cheerfulness,as daughter-in-law gave me two garlic bulbs which should at least see me through another week. I'm going to go through my freezer and fridge later today (yes, I'm putting it off) and assess if I can go another week without buying anything. If I run short of vegetables, I have tinned beans, pulses and dried lentils so should probably be ok; I just need to exercise ingenuity in using them all. Here's another Jamie Oliver recipe from 'Save with Jamie' -I've scribbled next to it in pencil 'yummy - really worth the effort' . He suggests it as a side dish for 8 but I love it so much I eat it as a main but halve or even quarter the quantities.

The Best Cauliflower and Broccoli Cheese

2 cloves garlic, 50grams unsalted butter, 50grams plain flour, 500ml milk, 500grams broccoli,75grams mature cheddar cheese, kilo cauliflower, 2 slices ciabatta or stale bread, 2 sprigs of fresh thyme, 25grams flaked almonds, olive oil.

Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees/gas4. Peel and finely slice the garlic and put it into a medium pan on a medium heat wth the butter. When the butter has melted, stir in the flour for a minute to make a paste, then gradually add the milk, whisking as you go, until lovely and smooth. Add the cut up broccoli and simmer for around 20 minutes, or until the broccoli is cooked through and starts to break down, then mash or blitz with a stick blender. Grate in half the cheddar and season.

Arrange the cauliflower, cut into florets, in a baking dish, pour over the broccoli white sauce and grate over the remaining cheese. Blitz the bread into crumbs in a food processor, then pulse in the thyme and almonds. Toss with a lug of oil and a pinch of salt and pepper, then scatter evenly over the cauliflower cheese. Bake for an hour or until golden and cooked through.

On the subject of pearls, I bought some large, cultured ones (not graduated, all the same size)when I was in the Caribbean for around
£10 -but I think you could find similar ones on any of the auction sites; they are no doubt coming out of the Far East. If you do have some, remember to wear them as they get better with wear/skin contact.

    Have a good day, Everyone.
