Thank you guys for being nice though! I'm going through a really rough time at home. With parents divorcing and siblings (two brothers one sister) in general always giving me stick and my two brothers always finding excuses to beat me up yeah I'm 22 I hate fighting and they're 16/18 I've reported them to cops but their statements always obviously don't match up with what they say anyways. But I've put my foot down and mum agrees with me that I'm not going to stop my life just to put the pieces of life together for them. They can suffer. I know pretty much how to manage my finances and things.

If you're in a tough situation which makes life at home unbearable, I'd recommend speaking to Shelter or CAB. They'll be better able to run through your options.

Sorry to hear about your life's troubles, and family hassles, Mr Shazza Man, and well done for sticking to your degree. You sound intelligent and sensible and should do well when you graduate.

Best thing to do is to ask the council HB section, but I fear that the peeps above are right; that you won't be able to claim as a uni student. It may be a case of muddling though and sharing with people and scraping through financially.

Also, as a few have suggested, maybe ask the CAB or council about possible housing as your home life is bad.

    Hope it works out. :)

  • Rent might be high in Manchester for those new ensuite fancy flats in the city centre, or you could do what plenty of students do and rent a room in a cheap house share in fallowfield or somewhere like that - it should be affordable with your student loan and PT job. It will do for a year until you get a FT job.

It is your third year so uni attendance is fairly low. It would be entirely possible to find proper work to top up your grant. Thousands of students do it every year even in the first and second year. It might curtail your social life for a bit but then it is only until the summer so hardly genuine hardship. Call centre, warehouse work etc anything with a shift element really. Not as much fun as events work but more regular. Another option would be catering work with the uni.
I'm astounded you think you'd get benefits surely you are aware of other students who work in real jobs whilst studying?

A room in a shared house would be £80 a week.
If you are motivated enough it is entirely possible to do.

How can you be looking for employment if you are a full time student ?

    Really?
Lots of students work between thirty and forty hours a week to afford to study. It's not ideal but that's life.

As another thought, you should speak to an advisor in the students union. Some universities have hardship funds, and they might be able to provide some assistance toward accommodation costs for the rest of your final year (no guarantee they will though).

A shared house in Fallowfield will cost £70-80 a week plus bills. (No council tax as a student). Most students seem to manage to pay that out of their student loans/ part time jobs/ parental contribution. If you are on a maximum level of student loans the university also offers a bursary.

Given the fact the OP is looking for a way to move out of home, the point that they could look for work and juggle it with study to fund this is entirely relevant.

Is there any type of housing benefit available for students in my situation aged 22 to cover costs of rent. .
