No MAC. code can I switch home phone without it

I want to switch to plusnet home and broadband via Quidco who currently have a cashback deal of £100 which ends at about midnight tonight. I rang BT to get my MAC code and was told the system was down and to ring again tomorrow. If I go ahead with the switch can I do this without the MAC code and if I do will this trigger the 30 day notice requirement. I think with a MAC code this notice period is reduced to 14 days. I have already paid BT the line rental in advance which is paid up to 11 December so either way that is not an issue it is just the monthly broadband at £14. Since I have just been billed for the period up to 26 November I won't have any more to pay if it is only 14 days but I would prefer not to miss out on the cashback if at all possible. Any information on when the MAC code is needed would be gratefully received.

Just rung BT who advise the MAC code can't be given on the phone but that they send it out by e-mail which can take up to 5 working days to be received as it has to come from bt openreach!!!! I guess I won't be getting any cashback. Must be their way of making moving that much harder and slower.

Don't give up so easily!

Start your application to switch to Plusnet via Quidco today and if you are prompted for a MAC, simply leave it for now and provide it to Plusnet when you have been given it by BT.

A MAC is not needed when switching from BT to a full LLU service provider, so the info in post #2 is irrelevant.

I was given my MAC over the phone by BT when I asked a couple of weeks ago.

If you don't use a MAC you will also get charged a cessation fee of ~ £30 by BT!

How do you use a MAC if you are going from a BT line to LLU as surely the BT line is being ceased so the internet is not being transferred to a new supplier ? Are you saying there is no way out of the charge ?

The OP is/was moving from BT to Plusnet which isn't a move to LLU.
As far as I'm aware the cessation charge is levied for a move to LLU by the losing ISP, as it counts as a cancellation /line cease ,altho' I certainly would be looking for a covering credit from the LLU ISP as a "sweetener". Haven't actually done it myself tho'.:)

Incorrect, there is no cease charge raised for a migration to LLU, either full or partial.

When do Cessation Charges apply? They apply to any customer who has a broadband cease placed on their line.
Generally, the main reasons for broadband ceases are:
A broadband account is cancelled (without switching providers)

Switching providers without a MAC Key - (LLU migrations excluded)

The telephone line used to provide broadband is cut off

Not all ISP's pass on any cease fee charged by BT e.g. O2 for one.

espresso - -interesting that you quote Plusnet -I'm with them currently; I was considering a move to Sky LLU when I negotiated a new deal in June but one of their guys in Customer Options told me that I would get charged a cease fee if I moved -obviously their agents don't read their own terms and conditions!!:)

I am moving from BT to Plusnet for my line. My broadband was with O2 (ADSL). Now on fibre.

I have not spoke to BT at all. I received a sorry your leaving letter the other day and nothing more.

forgotmyname -about 6 weeks after your move occurs you will receive a final "bill" from BT -Dependent on how you paid BT this may be either a credit or a debit statement.

I have only recently paid the bill and made zero calls so i should be getting a refund.

O2/Sky on the otherhand took money on the day i left them. Naughty...
