Scottish Power DD doubled and they won't lower it
Options
I could do with some advice here on the best steps to take next.
Now I know what you're thinking from the title, that I'm massively behind on my account or that there have been estimated readings. It's none of these things. And it gets worse...
I give monthly readings to Scottish Power and this has kept my account roughly in balance. Now I was slightly behind coming out of winter (just over £50) which is what I expected. At the current rate of DD (just over £100) and summer use I would clear that in a few months then build up a slight credit before heading into winter. I've been uber careful about gas use for this exact reason, to keep my bills down. All good so far, right?
Following a mix up with meter readings (now fully resolved) Scottish Power have decided to put my DDs up to nearly £200.
Following this I have called up and they assured me over the phone that the DD would be corrected (now the readings are OK) and remain at the old figure. I was told this was "easily sufficient to cover my use". I emailed and have it IN WRITING that the DD would be and in fact is set to the old figure. What could possibly go wrong?:rotfl:
I've just checked my bank. Guess what? Yep, they've just taken the best part of £200.
Of course I've contacted them (AGAIN!!!) about this but it seems emails and phone calls do nothing so I'm hoping someone can advise me on here.

Switch away from them is the ultimate way to solve it. They'll have to refund if you're in credit. Then you can set up a DD level you like with a new supplier - they'll have no access to you previous usage just your final reading.
Maybe mention this to SP before you do it and maybe they'll sort it out.0 -
Contact your bank. Under the DD Guarantee Scheme they can immediately recall your money if SP have failed to follow the DD rules. Sounds as if they have.0

Switch supplier - they are always at it. Haven't you heard of Bank of Scottish Power?
I am days away from completing my switch to EDF after 13 years with them - never again.0 -
Quite. In my dealings with this company, they strike me as having a series of disparate systems with (human) points of failure between them. Your circumstance could highlight this. I too switched away to EDF as a result.0

It is their way of letting you know they do not want your custom.Be happy...;)0

Not really, if it was, they wouldn't beg you to stay after !!!!ing you off continually.0 -
If my experience of EDF customer service is typical you will find that they make Scottish Power very good indeed. They've been a nightmare to deal with.0

I find it hard to believe but a product with no exit fees from EDF means that it they do fail to deliver, then a move away will be quite easy.0 -
Ive been with EDF for donkeys years and never had a problem.
And customer service is excellent.
Look at your annual statement op, see how much you used over the year.
Add the amount you are in debt, and divide it by 12, that's how much you should be paying per month.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thank you all for taking the time to reply about this.
To answer a few questions, I cannot switch away (yet) because I'm tied into a fixed rate until next year. Whether or not I chose to do that will be assessed nearer the time but this is certainly a very large black mark against Scottish Power in my book. Not that they seem to care.
I have had another written reply again stating that the DD is set to the original figure but since they've already been "mistaken" about this, I'm somewhat doubtful. This is confirmed by the on-line account still showing the higher figure for DD amount. So I'm left with two problems:
1) How to get my £100 back
2) What payment method to set up since Scottish Power clearly cannot be trusted with direct debits.0
