Default on credit file

Options
A default has recently been placed on my credit file, it relates to something I honestly dont know anything about from 2010.

Its only £77, if I pay it will the default be removed completely or can lenders still see that there was a default there but its now cleared?

Theres no other payment history showing, just a default of £77.

First query it with the relevant cra, as if it not true it shouldn't be on there, presume you will have to contact the lender who has recorded it and get them to correct it.

Main problem is that is has already been recorded, definitely worth trying to get it removed, settling it would look better but would still be a black mark. It's importance depends on how much you want or need credit, could have a detrimental effect on a mortgage application for example.

Have they actually proved it. Dont pay it, question it if you dont know what it was for.

If you dispute it and they have made a mistake they should remove it.

if you do know that you actually owe it and agree, the default will stay on your file for 6 years from when it was registered.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Its from BT and is registered at an old address of mine.

The name on account is mine as is the DOB and it is registered at an address I once lived at. In fact the start date is also within the time frame that I "technically" lived at that address. In January 2010 I had moved out of a house I shared with a few people and in with a girlfriend, as I was unsure if this would last or not, I decided to carry on paying my share of the rent and leave all my bills, bank statements etc registered there. It did last and we ended up moving to another part of the country in mid 2011. It was only at this point that I changed everything over to our new, shared address.

I used online chat with BT, they told me to speak to Equifax. I have filled in their online query form and am awaiting a response.

So do BT have to prove that this account was mine? And if so, how can they do that? You can setup a phone and broadband account online without providing any ID and without signing anything. I am assuming if you setup a BT account over the phone then they would have even less proof as theres no IP address to track back to.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Was the BT account in your name?

If the BT account was in your name you would have be liable for any debt on the account.

I have just had a similar issue lived in a house share bill was in my name. My housemate never paid the final bill on its arrival and have defaulted me for a small amounts on my phone line and broadband, these was from accounts which was set up in August 2008.

However having spoke to a nice woman they removed the defaults for me.

Yes its in my name but I didnt open it. I had a Virgin account whilst at that address which I carried on paying for when I moved in with the girlfriend. My other housemates also contributed to this. We didnt have a landline with Virgin though as I didnt need one. I am assuming the BT account was for a landline.

A tenancy wont be worth anything as I didnt have one with the girlfriend, that was her house that she had lived in for quite a while before I come along. So whilst I did sort of move out of this house in January 2010, before the BT account was opened, I didnt actually move out, stop paying rent and become an official tenant elsewhere until May 2011

So have you ever had a BT account linked to the address that the account shows on your credit report?

I spoke to BT to get my issue sorted, it was totally my fault for not checking that the bill was paid so I did really appreciate what they for me.
