  • You don't need a MAC when you move away from an LLU service. Just sign up with a new provider. Old one will get cancelled.

I've got around 2 months left and my contract with O2 will be up , I'll be leaving for similar reasons as the OP.

When I joined O2 I was on 5.5 Mb and rock solid connection with no outages for the previous 2 or 3 years I was with Sky , I'm now on 3.7 Mb and every few months it just dies and I'm unable to connect until I contact O2.

When I call them they keep asking me to connect to the test socket etc despite the fact no fault has ever been found with my equipment or line, the line from cabinet to master socket was all replaced around 4 years ago.

O2 will not admit the problem is on their equipment but it miraculously fixes itself after I call them which I think proves where the actual fault is.

Each time I have to call them to " reset my line" they promise to call back after 24 hours to check how the conection has been working but they rarely do.

I've stuck it out with them for a few years as it was bearable because I kept getting 6 months free each time I called at renewal time but even 5 years free wouldn't be enough anymore.
  • UPDATE

The Openreach man came last week and installed my Infinity 2 hardware. I ran my automated tester to see how it compared to my O2 "service" after it had settled for a few days.
The figures below are the averages over a 24hr period with tests every 15 mins.

I can only say that I am VERY impressed (so far :D)
The only problem ................ is that I can now download faster than most sites can support :rotfl:

The last bit of your text where you say that you can now download faster than most sites can support which is often quite true. I'm on a 30mb connection with VM and some sites still load up slow due to the fact that the server holding them sites cannot handle the speed my internet connection is download the data at.

Also the BT fibre optic broadband seems a lot more faster. What package have you taken out with BT if you don't mind me asking.

I've just used my O2 MAC to move to Plusnet.

I'm on the O2 legacy standard package so could get upto 8Mb for £9.50 a month but as I don't use an O2 mobile anymore it's £14.50.

Plusnet Estimated line speed from phone number:
    Download Speed: 80Mb
    Upload Speed: 20Mb
    (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit)

From 3.7Mb to 80Mb for an extra £5.49 a month ......... no brainer for me , bye O2.
  • I left O2 earlier this year. Not that I had many complaints about their service (although they were getting an increasing number of DNS outages).

The reason I left is because they have really dropped the ball by not offering a FTTC product.... and BT Infinity became available at my address.

    Haven't looked back - have gone from a 12Mbps D/L throughput to 63Mbps, and 1.8Mbps U/L to 17Mbps.

Plus BT arranged for a fault on my line to be fixed the very same day I reported it!

So am V. happy with BT so far. O2 have big cash problems and are concentrating on 4G now. Can see them letting their fixed line business wither away unless Telefonica have a change of heart (Telefonica actively turned down O2 Wholesales request for funding for a Fibre product).
  • Final Update:

Have been with BT for about 8 weeks now. Infinity 2 has (so far) has exceeded all my expectations. The reliability has been 100% - download speeds have been averaging 10mbs above BT's forecast.

This time of the evening with O2 I was getting well below 2mbs - often dipping to zero - tonight's BT effort below:- :D:D:D
