Custom computer

My computer has just died. Was told it is not worthy to have it repaired and he said he can build one for me at £500. The processor is intel 1155 multicore CPU 2.7 GHZ. My bascis are very basic, just browsng, internet banking, downloading pics and the odd film. The monitor is 20 ins with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Storage 500 and ram 4. Pl can anybody tell me what I should be looking in a good computer, I have not got a clue but he said he can build a better one. I will always buy from the shop as it s easier. Advice, pl? Thanks

  • If your needs are basic.

It may not be "worthy" but it will cost less than £500 to mend.

If you really must get a new one your monitor will work.

Amazon will sell you a cheap PC (for example the Acer Aspire X1930 for £250 or less)

As IJC stated, for far less than £500 you will be able to pick up a new base unit that will equal or exceed all the specs of your current computer.
Depending on where you buy it from, you will also have a relaible guarantee which isn't always the case when you get one built a small shop.

John Lewis for example give a minimum of a 2 year guarantee on all of their computers, and whilst they may be slightly more costly than Amazon, you have the benifit of being able to browse in the shop and if you have any problems, their aftersales service is normally very good.

I wouldn't have thought that an independent PC shop would be able to compete with the mass-market pre-built PCs if your needs really are pretty basic.

The "not worthy of a repair" sounds a bit fishy to me. If you don't need a machine that performs any better than you have AND the shop are going to custom-build a new one for you... why don't they use all the components from your existing machine that are working! What's actually wrong with the old machine, anyway?

Anyway, this one is £410 and vaguely similar spec. (I haven't looked into it that deeply and I don't know what else is available, so it's not a recommendation), but it's probably overkill if you're just going to be surfing the web and looking at pictures and video...

No, he is not having me on, the computer is about 5 yrs old dell dimension 5150 and it is so slow I was going to replace it but it died on me. My son tripped on the cables and damaged the front usb ports since then cannot swtch the computer off, the amber light, switch on light is flashing continuously and i had to unplug from the main. The price of £500 includes a monitor as well. I have used ths guy before and he had a dhop but now he is working from home. He offers 1 yr guarantee and will come and set it up for me and I think it is worth paying for the personal service. I have done some research and cannot find anything about ntel multicore, he will put a toshiba 500 gb sata drive. Thanks

Multi-core just means that the chip has more than one core; it's not a brand/model name.

I thought from your original post that "Intel 1155 multicore" must've been a reference to Intel's LGA 1155 socket, which accepts Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs, but the Dell Dimension 5150 uses an Intel Pentium 4 5XXX or 6XXX processor according to the specs here (page 103):

I think he means the new system is a lga1155 machine rather then what his old machine was.

I think the price is ok, as long as it comes with a copy of windows.
Although really if your needs are basic you're better asking him to spec you and AMD build with a fusion APU processor

Have you checked all the leads and ram are secure internally? Did it actually fall onto the floor during this accident?

you'd probably get a complete replacement 5150 for under £50 on ebay. Slow pc's are always caused by software, and therefore can always be fixed without spending money.

shop built/home builds tend to fail faster than branded.

Those are expensive. This Medion is a good place to begin, at £249.99.

not much in it if you use the Dell 10% voucher code, and 11.11% topcashback on top.

It's not clear what's wrong with the existing one, apart from it doesn't switch off, -- does it switch on, and boot?
