Back onto petrol its getting to the stage where you wont be able to afford to go to work. I have had to take a day here and there off on leave as I didnt have the money to get to work. This is like the last day before pay day and I know other people who have done the same. Busing it isnt an option as it would cost more money than using the car. A cut in duty would be welcome but long term this isnt going to sort it out. This needs radical thinking and the green parade with walking and cycling need to get into the real world.

    how about cycling part way?
if you are reaching the point of not being able to get to work,
then what are you going to do?
the real world is if you cant afford X,then you need to do without of find a way to afford it.
someone else on the thread is cycling a few days a month
it doesnt have to be either/or
however, every saved/shortened journey is money in the bank

    Green parade?
I couldn't care less about the environment. I "believe" in global warming, I just don't think it's going to affect me personally negatively enough to care.

That doesn't mean I don't cycle. Saves money. Why would I want to give money to Shell and friends if I don't have to?

The "radical thinking" needed is that only small numbers of people should need cars for work. Everyone else should just move closer. If it needs a Government initiative, so be it.

You can not get near a station up here that sells red diesel, ques right out on to the street with people filling drums.

But ultimatel, it is down to the individual to adapt to their circumstances and situation.

Oil is a finite comodoty that is in increasingly huge demand - the perfect cocktail for rising prices. Fuel prices are not coming any time soon unless someone can come up with a politically friendly way of finding £25bn worth of alternative revenue and/or cuts to public expenditure.

Times change and both businesses and individuals need to adapt to that change.

In the real world, the days of cheap car driving are long gone and will never come back. Your choices seem to be a mixture of:
    • Move closer to your work so you can walk or cycle
    • Car share
    • Motor bike/scooter/electric bike
    • Work from home if possible
    • Change jobs
    • Public transport
    • Pay rise
I appreciate that not all are possible but the inflexible "Something must change so I can use my car" attitude is no longer appropriate.

    • Driving more economically
    • Driving a more economical car

Well I for one am getting a shopper on wheels! DH already cycles to the train station every day. We dont use the car at the weekend unless we have to. If I need any bits of shopping at the weekend we walk to the supermarket (usually combine shopping with school run). I know this may be difficult for some people but this is it, life is gonna get a whole lot worse.

Forgot to mention that DH has been looking into electric bikes which could be a longterm solution for us.

People seem to forget that its a privilege to drive, not a right. Its your choice to live xx miles from work, your choice to have kids and drive them to school.

I can't think of anyone who 100% needs their car outside of work (IE driving for a living, Police/Fire/Ambo).

I choice to drive to work, so I should pay the price.

It's a choice where you work! I used to live 1 mile from work made redundant, my son was in a good school and my husband still lives a mile from work, only job available 11 miles away. Even if we moved to live in the middle then both of us would need transport, and my son could not walk to school. Choose where to work, which planet are you on!
