Can anybody beat O2 at £9.38pm inc line rental

Hello, need to install broadband in a property which I let out. The phone will not be used for call.

The cheapest I could find is £9.38pm for their all rounder unlimited service which comes with a free router I think. Although I'll have to get one of their free sims and I'll only use it once!

Cost breakdown
1. Line rental 12 x £7.50 = £90
2. Broadband 9 x £12.50 = £112.50 (first 3 months are free)
3. Quidco cashback = £90

ie. £90+£112.50-£90/12= £9.375 pm with free router.

Can anybody find a better deal?

    O2 "All Rounder Unlimited Service" is actually capped at 100GB per month usage allowance, so it's not unlimited. O2 also use traffic management to cut bandwidth on P2P applications. Always read the small print, and always read the fair usage policies of any ISP before signing up ...

    If you want truely unfettered broadband try Be, they don't strangle your connection!
  • Of all the places I've rented in the past I've always arranged my own connection. Indeed if there were one already there, I'd still have my own VM cable plumbed in so I get a direct line of accountability wihout a middleman (no offence intended)

    Obviously I don't know the circumstances here but this seems riddled with danger. What's to stop the tenants plugging in a handset and making calls (unless you get call barring implemented); are you going to bill the tenants for any broadband over-allowance usage (there seems to be no way to stop this from happening), if it goes down at 10pm on Friday night are you going to welcome the phone calls from the tenants and liaise with the ISP?

    It's much more normal for the tenants to arrange their own connection.

    To provide broadband as part of a tenancy agreement is absurd. Anything the tenants download, has your name all over it, and the liability.

    You presumably don't provide gas/electricity/water within the tenancy, why on earth would you provide broadband?

    Nothing wrong with providing gas/electricity/water and broadband for tenants - sounds like a decent landlord to me ...

    Whats the minimum contract length?

    If you are set on providing this, then Plusnet might be a good option. Apart from being fairly competitive (get a referral and you get cash back/months free depending on the offer) it has no contract options so if you don't have tenants for a while you can kill the contract quickly and cheaply (I'm using them as I'm only in a 6month rental). I'd also get part of the contract changed to include a disclaimer regarding the services your providing on their behalf in the property, and that they take all responsibility for use or misuse of them (such as dodgy downloading) just to be on the safe side.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Yes I do pay for the electric/water/council tax/insurance/TV licence and soon broadband. Hence why I'm looking for the cheapest option.

    Scho the contract is 12 months I will look at plusnet. I'm not worried about misuse as I have signed tenancy agreements which I can show if there was ever was a problem.

    Crabpaste, thanks for pointing out the top up situation. I can get around this problem by using my wife's payg number which is with o2.

    You sound like the dream landlord! What possible reason have you got for paying your tenants' Council Tax, TV licence, and contents insurance? No one would expect those to be included in the rental. And how do you regulate electricity and water usage?

    As a tenant, I would be very concerned about inclusive council tax (unless this is an HMO?). Liability for CT legally sticks with the occupant, so if the LL did not pay the council, it is the tenant the council would chase - even if the tenant has already 'paid' for the council tax via his rent!

    As a LL you are clearly very trusting. Your tenants could build up massive gas/electricity bills in your name......

    What insurance are you providing? Buildings? Yes, it's your building so clearly right. Contents? How do you know what contents the tenants have? And if there's a loss, who makes the claim? You on the tenant's behalf? This is fraught with problems.
