So so useful! DS off to Leeds Uni in September (subject to getting grades of course, insurance offer is Birmingham BTW) and just came across this. Went to Leeds last weekend for accommodation day open tour. He wants self-catering. (Leodis if anyone knows this one).

Not without experience in this area as DD was in hall at B'ham for one year but not happy and came home every weekend then transferred to uni in London (where we are) to slightly different course and finished her degree here. Everyone's lists and comments here are really great and am bookmarking this thread!

Now the daft question! :o When I do laundry at home I hang up clothes that can't dry outside or go in the tumble drier -I put them in the bathroom till they're dry and then iron them. DD brought her laundry home every weekend! Now I know that students say they never iron, and the ones I've seen do look clean and respectable - lol - so what does everyone do with their Primark type T shirts which IMO would look like dusters without careful washing and a quick iron?!

    TIA for any advice.
    Louise

I'm too posh to shop at primark :-o

However, any cheapo t-shirts I do buy, I never iron anyway. I do like the make sure things are washed though!

    I only iron shirts.

I dry my washing in my house on a clothes horse/airer type thing and I find if I arrange t-shirts (from Primark, H&M etc) on them so they are straight and nicely hanging they don't need ironing. They sometimes have a couple creases in them, but they fall out while I wear them. I only iron dresses or shirts - things where the creases are noticable.

I didn't use a tumble drier - found it ate my money while in halls and never had one in private rented houses.

I am off to uni this September as a mature student but have lived both in shared student houses and in halls, and let me tell you, some of the bedrooms are tiny.

    Things I have found invaluable:

Iron, ironing board and clothes horse/airer
    Computer
    Slow cooker
    Steamer
Bread maker (all these kitchen items can be bought cheaply from the Value ranges at Argos, Asda and Tesco, so don't baulk at the premium branded prices)
Food storers (I cook meals in bulk and then freeze extra portions to save time and money and stop me buying pricey ready meals or takeaways
Mattress protector and fleece blanket for the bed
My own radiator in addition to central heating
A fan for the hotter months
Make use of the space under your bed to store things, in storage boxes if possible
Umbrella and waterproof jacket for walking to and from uni/shops/work
The end of day price reductions on food etc at the supermarkets
PAYG dongle for internet useage when our broadband cuts out!!

Definitly no need to bring anywhere near as much stuff as mentioned above, especially if its halls your moving into! It does however have some good items mentioned there!

From when living in halls its best to keep things simple and try and be efficient with what your taking. Heres a few things that I recommend:

-Wok and a Pan with Lid - Enough to cook about anythin, and with the lid its easy to drain pasta/rice without the need for a collander.
    - Chopping board/Scissors/Tin opener
    - Cutlery/Plates/Bowls - Check if these are provided however
    - Appliances - Some places provide toasters/kettles others dont, I would wait until you get there as other students may also bring them and no-one needs 3 toasters!
    - Cook book - I took a nice and simple student cookbook (Called Nosh for students), the brilliant thing was that its designed for students so it keeps things simple and provides measurements in "cups" - no need for scales!
    - Storage - as mentioned by others some boxes for under the bed and also a hang down storage from wardrobe rail were very useful for maximising space.
    - Clothes/Toiletries etc
    - A small bag with paracetamol/plasters/throat sweets etc (Will come in useful immediately during freshers week... :D)
    - Passport Photos/Letters relating to uni offer/Qualification certificates (May need for matriculation)
    -Duvet/Bedding
    - Yellow health card thing - Makes it simple to switch GP practice (No need to fill in lots of forms!)
    - Computer/laptop - Useful for tv online/dvds/internet etc etc!
    - Mp3 player/Camera!
    - Posters/Pictures for walls

Thats about all I can really think of! Aslong as you bring the main essentials with you, small things can easily be picked up when your there!

This is my fourth and last year at uni now and I normally take everything i can with me. But I'm lucky I only live an hour and a half away and my parents have a land rover so everything can fit in.

I don't get much money because my parents earn quite a bit and they don't help with with money problems, so if i take everything with me theres a chance i need to buy less stuff

    Things you don't need
    - Iron and ironing board. You will never use them, as part of our halls we have a drying room with one in. I have never seen a person use them and I've been in halls for four years.
-If you get a good internet signal you don't need a TV, just use Iplayer. Use your laptop for DVDs as well. Thats as long as your not taking a games console with you (I do have a TV but this is the first year we've had internet in halls, and its so bad i can't even get onto HMV.com)
    - Books for your course, wait until you get there. I have never used mine, i've read them but found the books in the library better for my essays and research. See if you really need them first or see if the library has them when you get there.

    things you need

    - A tin opener, and keep it in your room. They always go missing in the kitchen
    - same with plates and cutlery keep in your room, they'll go missing or will always be dirty when you go to use them
    - lots of pants, when i've got a deadline i am too stressed and don't have the time to do my washing!
    - When i first get to uni i always make my bed first so it feels more homely so i have my duvet cover on my Duvet and pillow cases on my pillows to save time.
    - Make sure you have money when you first get to uni, you won't get your student loan straight away. Make sure you have enough money for freshers week and a few weeks more incase your loan is late.
    - lots of cold medication. I always get freshers flu, every single year. Its your bodies way of reacting to all these new germs that your housemates have and your body gets so run down by the amount of alcohol consumed in freshers week.

Make sure you take a crate of beer with you, everyone is nervous no one knows anyone so try and offer a few around and try and make some friends.

Remember how much you're buying through the year and whether you can get it home. So many times i've had to take suitcases home for my friends for the summer because they would have to bin their stuff.
    £11,000 in 2011 = £71.74

one thing that i have found really useful in the past two years is having a fridge in my room.
I do have a full sized one (I did want a small one, but i was offered this one for free. Wouldn't be very MSE to turn it down and buy a different one) But food always goes missing. Where i am the halls are very large and the kitchens are shared by 24 people. I got so fed up of treating myself to something nice and it getting stolen. People come back drunk or stoned and just raid the fridges not caring that it is someone elses I got really fed up of this.

Its the same with frozen food but if you find a supermarket cool bag and get a lock to lock the handles together no one can steal it.

It might sound a bit depressing but i got so much food stolen from me it was like i was paying for two people to eat. It was the last straw when I bought some special cider sausages to treat my boyfriend when he came to visit and they had been stolen.
