Wow! Your trip sounds absolutely fantastic! So pleased you had such a great time. Back in Feb/Mar we covered a similar route in reverse from San Francisco to San Diego, and also loved SLO Santa Barbara and Monterey - managed to get to the evening farmers market too, and it was lovely (thanks for your tip!). As we were travelling with 2 of our teenagers we stayed mainly in the chain motels (big rooms for price) so didn't get to stay in a B&B - definitely a must for when we do our first road trip without kids!
  • We're doing Highway 1 too and I'd pencilled in SLO as a place to stay so I'll make that a definite now :D

Now for Part 2, General Stuff about our holiday that may be useful for others.*** some of it will be fairly obvious to people who have travelled to Nevada, Arizona, California before, but I'll put it in anyway ;)

Before you go. Research, Research & Research again and try and find 3 times as many things that you would like to do in each place, as well as giving yourself a list of places to visit/things to whilst your going from A-B-C. & then do more research and add more things.

    The flight over to America.
If you have the option of a Direct flight, or if the Direct flight is only a wee bit dearer, consider doing so, as you will avoid any missed connection hassles. If your connection time looks at all 'iffy' create your own list of alternative flight options to present to the Customer Service people (we suggested a re routing via Dallas that meant an extra flight for us, but meant that we got into Las Vegas 4 hours earlier that the option that they were offering.

    Car Hire
Petrol was up as far as $4.25/£2.14 per US gal, $5.10/£2.57 per UK gal for Unleaded and it was increasing everyday. To us, it was still great VFM, but it is still a lot more than it used to be - bear it in mind when you are costing the holiday up. As for the hire car itself, IMO, if you are going to be knocking up some miles, get a big car, a really big car. We initially got a Chrysler 300 Base (that was supposed to be a luxury car, but was a Premium car), it was large enough for a family of 4 with their holiday luggage, gave 30mpg and when on the flat or on a very gentle slope, went well enough. But if you needed to get on at all, the 2.7lt V6 engine and 4 speed gearbox made for tiresome progress. After 4 days the car developed a fault (or was it our imagination ?) and we swapped the car for a luxury class vehicle (by now I had rechecked the paperwork) and we got a Lincoln Towncar. 4.6lt V8, truly massive in every department, gave 25 mpg and was vastly suprerior to the Chrylser for our touring purposes (we did 600 miles in the 300 and it was ok -ish, we did over 2600 in the TownCar and it was very comfortable.
If you are considering a Convertible, think once, think twice, think three times and then think again. For an odd day, it would be fun. Travelling hour after hour in baking temperatures with the roof down would be (IMO) one step away from madness. Very few Americans hire convertibles - with good reason.
Picking up your hirecar from the hotel is a real winner.

    Prices
Here's a shocker for you. America is no longer a cheap place to holiday, in fact in some circumstances, its quite expensive. Thankfully, with the £/$ rate being so good in our favour at the moment, we don't really see how expensive things are, but when the rate readjusts (as it surely will at some stage) be prepared for a nasty surprise.
Unless you are going to survive on fast food and promos like Subways 1 foot long sandwich for $5, you'll be eating out in restaurants and their prices have increased by 25-30% in some areas.
The US economy has really taken a hit and the price of fuel (in the US is has increased by over 100%) & credit crunch has had an enormous effect. The portion sizes however haven't reduced and TBH as a family, you could easily share 2 adult meals between 2 adults & 2 children, or 1 childs meal between 2 children if you wanted to.
You'll probably find the higher end food chains such as Outback a lot queiter than you expect.

    more tomorrow.

Did you use your mobile phone and if so how did it work out?

I will be interested inwhat MTC has to say on this one. In my experience, if you only want it to phone home to the UK, get a phonecard instead as it is heaps cheaper (you can use hotel phones or phone booths with this). www.phonecards.com is the best IMO. Get the Stars and Stripes option - I think $20 is the cheapest. They send you a PIN no and instructions by email.

We took our lap top last year and were so glad as there was Wifi in most of teh hotels we stayed in. Great for checking out stuff and occasionally rearranging hotel dates etc.

MTK - if you could offer some thoughts and words of advice for me it would be much appreciated.

I've been posting on this thread about a similar holiday (well honeymoon) that I am planning for in August.

We're flying into Las Vegas then back from San Francisco 14 days later.

The idea at the moment is to spend 3/4 nights in LV, then grab a cheap flight over to San Diego before hiring a car from there to do the West Coast Drive up to San Fran.

I've been reading a lot about the different places up the coast, so was already thinking that stops in Santa Barbara, Monterey, etc were a must.

If you were driving from San Diego to San Fran how long would you say is essential (at the moment planning on probably 2 nights in San Diego so leaving around 8 days/nights left and probably wanting two nights in San Fran so would 6 days for the drive up be enough time or not to fit things in?

hi folks on top of jetlagged children, I've now returned to a months backlog of work in the office. I'll carry on the thread ASAP, but it may be a couple of days or so.

I've bought a USA Sim from www.0044.co.uk for £34 which includes $25 of pre-paid calls. 0044 give you your USA number before you leave so that you can pass it around before you leave. Calls work out much cheaper than roaming charges and they also have a dial through number for people to route a call through to your mobile that gives them very cheap calls. We'll also get a landline phone card too which I believe you can pick up at gas stations.

Apologies folks, I gave the incorrect site for the phone cards. This is the one I should have referred to:

    www.1stphonecards.com

There is a $20 or $50 dollar Stars and Stripes card. The $20 card gives you a maximum of 600 minutes to the UK. Approx 3.3 cents per minute. We always use it and always have minutes to spare but $20 is cheap enough.

Once again, sorry if I caused any confusion.:o

Thanks for the info so far.

When your time allows I will look forward to reading more.

I am really interested to know how the children managed with the trip and if you would recommend it as I have a 6 and 7 year old who I would be taking.

    Thanks

Arrived back this morning, no sleep overnight. I took two children aged 10 and 7 on my own and managed fine. Had a great time. Will also be posting things I think will be useful when I am back in the land of the living. I did non-stop Heathrow to LAX, two nights then up to San Francisco by train for two nights, picked up car and drove over to South Lake Tahoe for two nights and then on to Mammoth Mountain (where the kids skied on 1 June!!), then back over to Monterey/Carmel for 3 nights (stayed in Pebble Beach from an ad off Craig's list), back up to SF, dropped off car(and missed our flight!) to fly over to Vegas for 3 nights, then by coach to LA and stay in Annaheim to do Disney and have a bit of a rest (fat chance!). Glad to help with any queries. x
There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.
