Along with ADSLGuide, two of the better speedtesters are:
Numion
BT
The former will give an accurate speed test for surfing and the latter for large file downloading. Both sets of results are over a sustained period of downloading so they will more accurately represent the true performance of your connection.

A decent 2 meg connection should fall in the range 1830 - 1920 kbps.

Don't be too discouraged by just one low speed result. Try the same test 5 or 6 times at different times of the day. If all the results are low, then get in touch with NTL to see if there is a problem.
Many factors can affect a speed test. If your ISP network is very busy, this could give a low result (contention issues), but this will change at different times during the day.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
