Sometimes I cant get to the shop so OH goes. He knows I am moneysaving and always ribs me about it and I dont mind. But what gets me is when I ask for something and say make sure you get so and so brand he always gets one more expensive. I was annoyed today as he had got me new potatoes and I know they are nice but they are no good for shepherds pie and I said to him please can you not get them in future when I ask for ordinary potatoes and he said no I like them. I wouldnt mind but I do nearly all the flamin cooking. When my cast comes off I am going to go to the shop myself without him but do you know when he comes with me he just places things in and just the brand he sees at eyelevel and I have a constant battle. Is it just me or are we all battling?

It's a man thing!
Mine not so bad as long you specify it down to the smallest detail - give an alternative & don't ask for more than 5 things! Sending one of 9 yr old DD's along helps quite a bit as they just sort it all out for him!
Personally I'ld have given him shepherds pie either topless with new potatoes or with very lumpy mash and then explained how new potatoes don't mash so well!
Also have a massive battle if he comes shopping (something thankfully he doesn't like & I don't encourage) it's a constant battle between "do you need that?" (not luxury goods - basic things like toilet cleaner, bleach etc) if I put something in the trolley and me trying to explain that that lovely cream sauce he's put in does look delicious and he probably will enjoy it but as I'm allergic to some of the ingredients he needn't bother!0 -
my OH is the same , usually i get him to take a book so he can read it in the car while i go and shop, but occasionally he comes with me and i could scream,he just puts anything that takes his eye in the trolly, he never thinks of looking at the price! meanwhile im telling him to put things back discreetly so other people don,t notice but then he's so stubborn we usually end up having a tiff in the shop. yep, i know exactly what you mean..... :rolleyes:0

Ah... it's so good to be single again
Just DD to worry about when I go shopping... and she is in serious training to become a fully fledged money saver! It's getting easier every time we go to the shop!
And I'm so good at nagging about moneysaving, I should get married again :rotfl: :rotfl:
Seriously though, my ex used to be exactly the same. We'd spend lots of money and have virtually nothing to show for it. And he had a passion for sachets to make sauces, even though I kept telling him that with a few herbs you achieve a better (and healthier) result!0 -
I think that it's a cave man provider thing.
Maybe he doesn't even know it himself but deep down there is something telling him that he must provide the best for his loved ones and buying the economy option on the supermarket shelves doesn't sit well with him and instinctively he is feeling as if he should be providing more money for the better stuff0 -
This is one area where I am so glad to be single, as I control everything that comes into our home, although I pretty much had control even when with hubby as he hated going shopping so left it all to me
I'm not sure what to advise though if your OH won't stick strictly to a list you give him as I'm still fortunate enough that if I send my youngest to the shop he only gets what I instruct him to, although that has it's downfalls as he doesn't appear able to think for himself and get an alternative if they've run out of what I need  ... so it seems we can't win with the male of the species no matter what we try "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Bluddy frustrating isnt it Jazzy?
My hubby will sometimes go and do the whole big shop for me if im at work and......don'tget me wrong......I really appreciate him doing this as I know a lot of blokes are averse to the supermarket  but.........
For one he won't use any money off vouchers ive saved. (id love some bloke on here to enlighten me about the stigma of this?)
Secondly.....what really gets my goat is his attitude to toilet rolls!!!!
How far does a pack of 4 actually go when you have a family of 4 hmmmmm?
No matter how often I tell him the bigger pack you buy of anything....the cheaper it works out in the long run.
The things he shops for I just have to buy all over again when I go shopping the following week as he never buys enough to last.!!
Ahhhh well !!! Such is life!! Bluddy infuriating none the less!!Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
Well I hate to break up your little party, but guess what? I'm a bloke, and guess what? I do all the shopping, and guess what? I never do it without coupons, and guess what? today my total spend was £187.41, and guess what? I paid £24.03 cash!!!!Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

I had to laugh when I read the first few posts on here and I don't know if I'm lucky or not! I do the bulk of our shopping as DH hates food shopping. Now, this suits me fine as if he went shopping, he would buy the same old things week in, week out with no variety. These days, if I need anything and send him out to buy it, he does invariably go for the cheaper option.....but it's no good if I ask him to buy, for example, washing powder and he comes back with washing up liquid instead because it was "buy one get one free" :rolleyes:I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

can i kind of hijack for a second please?
i have looked everywhere i can, but seem to be blind where it comes to a thread that tells me where to find all these coupons you all shop with
can anyone help me out please? point me in the right direction? ta x0 -
I take cash and work it out as we go along, then if he puts something in,I can say, hmm,I havent got enough cash for anything extra(I have a housekeeping bank account) so if he still wants it,it comes out of his spending money.0
