Student looking for Broadband

I have read the many articles in the utilities section but am still scratching my head.
I am moving into a flat with 3 other students in London. We would like a relatively fast connection but nothing too large - possibly 2mb. It needs to be a steady connection as one of my flatmate's is from Gibraltar and uses SKYPE to call home.
The three that seem to be the best are Virgin Media, Tiscali or Talk Talk. But my home connection is with Virgin and we have had an unsteady service for nearly a year now - I am reluctant to sign up with them for this reason. Our contract on our flat is for 12 months so we can't really do an 18 month contract. The flat currently does not have a phone line put in - so I'm pretty much in the dark about this too. I think I need to contact BT and ask them to put a line in - which will cost & then we'd have to pay line rental?? I also see with Tiscali that you have to pay line rental with them too?
I have been told to avoid Orange and I would rather forfit my freshers week vodka than go with AO-HELL.
Any help would be much appreciated!
P.S I apologise to my mother in advance who is also on the board. Yes I succumbed. You should be proud!

You should also avoid Tiscali and Talk Talk - since you need a phone line, you will need to stick with BT for 12 months anyway, so there's not much point looking for a combo deal for line rental and broadband ... I may be wrong - but I'm sure it is 12 months anyway . . .
As for a broadband recommendation - when I was looking at dial-up ISPs here for a friend (and subsequently recommended them on here due to positive feedback) - I looked at Martin's recommendations, and he pointed Zaggle out. When I was there I had noticed that they were offering 8mb broadband for £16.99 a month (special offer) with no caps - so maybe give them a try.
One of my recommendee's placed an order to upgrade from their dial-up with Zaggle to their broadband offer last week...
Anyhow - good luck with your search!0 -
Yes you will need to take out a 12 month contract with BT. From their T&C
"If the customer terminates their agreement for a residential PSTN line before the end of the 12 month minimum period the customer will pay a charge for ending the agreement early, by way of compensation to BT. The charge for ending any service for either a new line or a line that you take over after the 1st May 2007, is the lower amount of either £70.00 or the total of the monthly line rental fees left in the minimum period."
If your paying your line rental to BT you can still have another providers broadband without paying their line rental as well.0 -
You should also avoid Tiscali and Talk Talk
Martin MSE recommends both of them.

Yes, he does recommend them both - but have you seen the many horror stories from both of these companies? It really is shocking - that is why I recommend avoiding these two . . .0

He also recommends PlusNet, who may well be Cheap, but are also Nasty. The cheapest isn't always the best value0

PlusNet were fairly good 2 years ago, then went downhill last year0

Was thinking of signing up to Zaggle, but do they have a minimum contract term or can you cancel when you feel like it?0
-
Also is it safe to give them my BT Account number to take advantage of free unlimited calls on their sign up page?0

If you want a steady super fast connection, I'd recommend Be (http://www.bethere.co.uk).
24Mbps for £24 a month, all uncapped. It's only broadband though, no freebies like webspace, email etc, which most people do not use anyway. I live about a mile from the exchange and easily manage 16Mbps downlink and 1Mbps uplink, which translates into downloading speeds of around 1.4Mbps.
And then of course, I think you'll need to add on the BT line. Having said that, have you checked Bulldog? They seemed to do a phone and broadband package for a bargain overall price. (http://www.bulldogbroadband.com/index3.asp)

I believe there is no minimum term contract, other than a month - and if I remember correctly, you can easily cancel through the My Account section
RE: Free Calls - yes, it'll be safe, since the signup page is encrypted, and anyhow, I think it is a CPS service service - so you could move it back to whoever if you felt like it. Though i'd imagine you can join this (free calls thing) at a later date if needed be0
