Kaspersky didn't install because it found the Norton and said to remove it before installing. The Norton had expired so would it still reinstall? Thanks. Joan.

Dunno its worth a shot tho, install Norton again as it maybe corrupt somehow, then restart PC then use the removal tool, what version of Norton was it? and was it the full Norton package?

Thanks, will give it a try. It's Norton 2006 upgrade and I think it's the full package. It says - Anti Virus, Personal Firewall, Privacy Control, Anti spam & Parental Control. As I said, not very techie but am learning thanks to you guys. :o

I have successfully removed Norton from three lappies, using the removal tool. It had expired from all three of them.

I would keep trying a few more times.

I have removed Norton many times.

Start by doing the add remove, then run the Norton removal tool.

    Now the tricky bit.

    BACK UP THE REGISTRY

    Start button/run and type regedit.

On the file menu click export for safety and store it in C:/ then if it all goes wrong you can restore the registry.

Now do a search for Norton and take your time to read the lines and delete anything thats related to Norton, there may be items that are not related just take your time.

Now search for anything Symantec and again take your time and delete them

Now do the search again, I always miss some the first time, but it's quicker the second time.

    Close the registry editor.

Now do a search of your C drive assuming thats where you installed Norton for "Symantec" and "Norton" and again delete what you find.

    Now reboot the computer.

And it should all be gone.

Playing with the registry can be dangerous and could stop your PC from working, do it at your own risk.

But I must have done it 50 times and never had a problem. Just take it slowly as there will be a lot and it will take some time.

If you want a quicker way to find the files and delete them try this programe "Registry Crawler":
http://www.4dev.com/regc/index.htm I am not sure what limitations are on the trial version.

Just to let you know, I did the above successfully on a couple of computers and I have had no training whatsoever on computers. I had my heart in my mouth messing with the registry, but Nortons is now fully removed.

I think they leave bits of it sitting around on your computer so you have to keep using Nortons via the update (you can't even instal a new Nortons on top of an old one!), and I'm sure a lot of people must just give up and use the update as it is so much easier!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Hello again. BritBrat - did everything you said about the registry bit and Norton was still there in add\remove programs but downloaded the Registry Crawler and that was able to remove it. So have now been able to install Kaspersky. Thank you so much for your help. Thanks to everyone for their advice. You're brilliant. :T :T :T :T :T

    Your welcome, glad it worked.

Yeah you most likley missed some, I know I normally do and I forgot to say go through twice for each search.

The registry is not a place to visit very often so dont mess with it.
