Also, when it comes to cleaning the actual crockpot, don't allow it to sit in water as over time the pot will weaken and it will crack. The rim around the bottom is usually unglazed and will weaken if left in water. I just rinse out the worst and then soak for a little while

I've been lucky not to have had anything stick or burn in mine so a quick wipe and rinse out is usually sufficient. However, on the occasions I haven't washed it immediately after emptying (and food has dried on a bit :o ) I just put some water in with a splash of fairy and turn it on for 20 mins and all the food dissolves into the water so I just have to wipe it out and dry it ;)

The reasoning is very straightforward really - carrots vary in size and people's perception!
People interpret carrot sizes differently a 'large' carrots to some may be long, but skinny; others would describe a 'large' carrot as one that is average length but chubby.
By keeping it as a 'cup' size it wouldn't matter whether your carrot was small and fat, small and skinny, long and thin, medium and thin etc., because once chopped and measured in a cup the recipe amount will remain the same. Ofcourse US recipes could simply put 4oz or whatever, but that's not how they measure their quantities.

    Does that make sense?

Good chilli recipe for slow cooker

Brown a pound of mince (I usually fry all the fat away) and then throw it in the slow cooker along with two chopped onions, two chopped green peppers, a can of kidney beans drained, a few cloves of crushed garlic, a few drops of tabasco sauce, half a litre of beef stock, 2 teaspoons of cumin, 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of chilli powder (medium), a teaspoon or so of mixed herbs, some onion powder and some garlic powder, two tablespoons of tomato puree and then give it all a good stir, stick the lid and leave it on low all day, or medium for 5 hours or so. I do overnight, the smell of chilli first thing in the morning fairly wakes the kids up in the morning with a jolt.

Sprinkle some cornflour in to thicken, give it a good stir, stick on high for a little with the lid on and heat up some tortillas under the grill. If there is any left (hardly ever), I just throw some pasta in to it and serve with some thick cheese sauce and tortillas, really good.

  • Can someone recomend the best type of slow cooker to buy and where from?
  • Can you wash the pot in the dishwasher? I hate manual washing up but I have been good so far and not tried it. Also can you do quorn in the slow cooker? I don't see any reason why not but I just wondered if anyone had tried it.
Sorry if these qs have been answered before.

I have a huge 6.5 litre one I think, It's Morphy Richards and cost around £35 from Argos. Silver casing and brown crockpot. Good if you want to do cooking for freezing etc. I did think about getting a smaller one to start with but figured in the long run, better getting big size as kids will be eating more as they get older, not less. Always hungry.

Check out EBAY link, on for £20-£25. This is the one I have. (Just noticed the P+P), robbing gets.

Check this Argos one, similar to mine but will two dishes simultaneously,

I've never used quorn in the slow cooker but have used TVP (soya chunks, etc) and it's fine, just keep and eye that you have sufficient liquid in the crockpot. Don't know about dishwashing the pot, would take up a heck of a lot of space and if it's not caked on and needing to be chiselled off then a bit of rinse with some dish soap is all that's needed. The instructions should say if it's ok to put in dishwasher. I think it would be.

I think we MSE'ers recently exhausted all stocks of the 6.5l one from Tesco and Amazon as they were selling it for £25 inc P&P :D

I've managed to find some left at Ebuyer though for £22.99 but not sure how much P&P is.

I got a black crockpot in mine which looks much better too ;)

Managed to find Ebuyer's P&P and it's £6.59, making a total of £29.58 ... so much cheaper than Argos, but not quite as cheap as Smiley_Mum's find below if you can use that :)

Thankyou Smiley_mum for the prompt reply, the p&p on the Ebay one cancels out any savings you may make so will check out the Argos catalogue.

It is a black crockpot in it, not brown. Eyes aren't as good as they used to be, comes from sitting in front of the pc for hours at a time :-)
