Londonderry - UK or Ireland?

I just sold a £30 item on ebay which I only wanted to post within UK as it is quite heavy but someone from Londonderry, Ireland has purchased

I was about to send an invoice but it said I had to select an international postage method, while I was trying to work out the international postage cost he paid for it by Paypal. He has altered it and paid the UK postage cost and this is the address paypal are showing for him:

LONDONDERRY
BT49OGB
Ireland

the postcode looks like a UK format to me, but royal mail online postage doesn't recognise it.

also i thought Londonderry was in Northern Ireland which I thought was part of the UK? yet the Paypal email said Ireland and ebay say he is registered in Ireland.

So can I post by 2nd class Recorded like I would for a UK address or does it have to go Airmail/Airsure/International Signed For?

Thanks in advance

It is Londonderry, Northern Ireland which is part of UK and comes under normal Royal Mail UK postage rates.

Co. Derry is in Northern Ireland which is part of the UK. Ireland is the island which contains NI and the Republic of Ireland

    That is what I thought

but why does paypal email say Ireland and why does his ebay account say registered in Ireland?

and why when I tried to send an invoice did it want me to choose an international postage option?

Many people dispute whether London(derry) should be in Northern Ireland. A lot of the residents consider the town part of the Republic of Ireland, but it is in fact part of the UK. Normal postal rates will apply.

It is Derry, not Londonderry and it is situated in that part of the glorious Republic of Ireland that was stolen by the Brits a few hundred years ago.

Paypal payment email says address is Londonderry...
  • Londonderry is its official name, albeit somewhat contentiously. Royal Mail's postcode finder does not (unless they've changed it fairly recently) recognise "Derry".
EBay thinks international postage rates apply because the seller has understandably selected Ireland rather than UK as their country when filling in address information, so the computerised system assumes that Ireland refers to Republic of Ireland.
I once had a post office assistant try to charge me international postage for a package to Antrim, which she was convinced is in ROI (it isn't).

Yes I think that would explain things, the buyer must have put their own address as Ireland instead of United Kingdom.

I have sent plenty of items to both parts of Ireland before without confusion before so couldn't understand what was going on with this item.

Thanks for all the replies :)

If the buyer wants to live in Eire then so be it, send it to Eire at the appropriate postal rate, tell them they will have to pay the increased amount, it may get there late due to the confusion over the address but that is there problem, I never contest the details of a buyers registered PayPal address that is there responsibility to ensure they provide the correct details any loss incurred as a result is there problem.
