When this has happened to me in the past a restart has always solved it. It should automatically use the profile of your windows user account

my profile is in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\hoz15vxt.default


where hoz15vxt is a randomly made string of characters

when I wanted to move my profile recently to a different computer, I copied the contents of that folder and put it into a newly created profile on a new computer (but not the folder itself because the other firefox would not be looking for hoz15vxt)

If can find your old profile folder but can't get it to work, you could try copying its contents into a newly created profile - but I'm sure there must be a far easier way
