I don't feel that sorry for her. Her solution is obvious. Sell the house. Shoot the chicken with cancer, and eat it. Sell the animals or Give them away to the RSPCA. Repay her creditors. Stop whining.
She has an income in excess of £150,000; if you can't make it on that, it's your fault and no one elses.
It remains not an issue of sorrow for her in her financial situation, but her emotional and mental one. I agree....she needs to seriously look at what hardship is...but...I remain of the opinion this likely to be some how related to mental health in a social environment where such extreme narcissism has not been recognized as ...unusal, where as to me, this seems obviously life crippling.0 -
I don't think there's any need to be sorry for her - the article is probably completely disingenuous. She has a healthy income (as far as we know) plus more money to come from the book. Even if her creditors are pressing her now, she has solutions in sight.
She's probably exaggerating her position - or got herself into it deliberately - as a current and topical angle to write about. The way things are with the economy, and the even worse way they probably will be, I'm-horribly-in-debt books are going to be good sellers. How many people were going to carry on reading a purely wah-I-can't-get-a-man column?
Is her income still that high or is that just what it was at peak? If she's not still editing maybe she's gone through a drop in income. Still got the book to rely on, though.
I wouldn't fancy eating a cancerous chicken myself. Although I probably have before without knowing it.0 -
You clearly have never followed her columns :rotfl:Her husband was an aspiring writer who never paid for anything during their marriage(according to her anyway).
She is so broke that today she mentions a hairdresser she used for a straightening treatment - a snip at £200.
i socialised with her ex husband when he first met liz as my own ex partner worked with him. he was in a lowly position at glr ast the time. it was clear from the outset he saw her as a chance to chuck in his job, live of her income and generally milk the situation to his advantage. he moaned about how she was nagging him for just lounging on the sofa all day making a mess when obviously she could afford a cleaner so why should he do anything.
i feel sort of sorry for liz. she clearly has a lot of 'issues'.Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
I've now got a fairly good confirmed fix on her farm.
BBC News article (+ video)
Which I've sourced to here on Street View (wait a moment for map to acquire position)
Satellite overview
Assuming she's not totally gone crazy with secured debt, and has equity in her farm - she could sell in today's market and I'd hope/imagine have at least £250,000 equity coming back to her. Probably more.
Liz Jones doesn't seem to ever be happy with what's she had/got. Always reaching for something else... spending away on clothes or a dreamy new life she's not particularly suited for (versus Lir's experience and understanding of what she' be getting into with landed type property and managing animals.) From Liz Jones' previous columns they suggest she has no standard type of pension, but she can surely get herself in order, sell and get back to London like fc says.. (especially before banks and creditors took any possession action), rent in London if necessary and get a few more years and mileage from her columns.
Liz Jones' suicidal themes in that column - which if I were editor I would not allow to be published as it's trash and insults those who are in much worse positions (financially and in terms of health) - are pathetic to me. It's a bit sad, but her consumption and spending has led her to where she is. She probably isn't totally destitute, is probably wealthier than many of us here - and could find happiness again even if it's leading a much less material and consumption lifestyle. She needs to sort herself out... even if it means coming to terms with downsizing.0 -

I think I would publish it if I were them, but with a comment. I think its ALMOST unpublishworthy but for the debt etc, and that....really disgustingly of me I admit, for the editor its got to be selling well.0 -
no, i said a while back on this thread that i think it is unprofessional and irresponsible for this to be published and for her editor to allow this to continue. its like shes slowly going mad in her little world, emailing her ranting columns off every week. why isnt she in counselling or therapy or something0

Either it's all going to end in tears, or it's not true.
Stopping her column, would presumably stop her income, I can't see a hard bitten editor letting that make his mind up though, if he wanted to stop it, he would. Obviously they want to milk this for all they can, good publicity. If she does commit suicide, get ready to welcome new self policing rules for the papers. Also a public outcry nothing was done to help this woman, who obviously is in a terminal decline.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

She's a prime example of why spending money doesn't buy happiness." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."
