Sorry just noticed some already have mentioned this.
hi nopot - I see you've fixed the above glitch. but there's the same problem on the question "how often would you eat this" - survey won't accept the same answer for more than one family member.
thanks for doing the surveys - they are very straightforward to fill out but I wouldn't have a clue about creating one.weaving through the chaos...0 -
just filled in the sweetcorn survey and I'm a bit worried that I might skew the statistics. I really didn't like them, so my scores a v low - but I think the problem was with me, not the recipe. Just wanted people to bear that in mind if the fritters come out with a low average score - but I know that we need to be honest.
ETA: looking forward to trying the cereal bars - I'm presuming the method would be like making flapjacks? must be patient as know our dear weezl has a rather more important bun in the oven to concentrate on today...hope all goes well at the hospital.weaving through the chaos...0 -
I've just added this to the start of the thread, but thought I'd pop it here for those who are keeping up with us daily
Tasks list if anyone would like to volunteer!
Each of the parts/tasks below will take a bit of writing/think collating, I guestimate this is quite an investment of your time. So do think if it's realistic, or if you just have a few ideas to share about a topic, maybe PM the main person who has put themselves forward, all tips will be gratefully recieved
why on earth did we come up with this mad scheme?
Shirley's big batch cooking day planner
Shirley's kit list and current best buys
glossary of food terms for a new cook
Tips for getting all the family on board, even the really stubborn ones
what to do when you arrive at the shop and there's no carrots?
We had some leftovers last night, I don't want to waste them!
I think I've just seen a better bargain what shall I do?
shirley's storecupboard of herbs, spices seasonings to make things just a bit more varied and interesting, but for teeny cash (or maybe for shirley's birthday pressie)
my current understanding of how the phases of this mad scheme might roll out:
Weezl's phase 1- recipe testing and frugalisation- come one, come all!
phase 2 - nutritional checks, stock checks, costings and finalisation of shopping list and planners
phase 3 - actual testing of the whole month by a couple of real families- gulp:eek:
phase 4 -tweaks and write up
Phase 5 make it known somehow to Bob and Shirley

Weezl - this is a great project and I wish you every success. I just wondered if you might want to add Shirley's resource centre to list suitable and helpful websites eg. a new blog Ive just seen mentioned on OS is http://thirty-quid.blogspot.com/ Feed a family of 5 for Thirty Quid a week.0

been thinking about the chou farci (cabbage and sausages slow cooked)and when to cook it (maybe tom) and wondered about the sausagemeat on Shirley and Bobs plan.
the sausage meat is £2.42. If you used Asda SP sausages and removed the skin to use them as sausage meat, you could get the same amount for 96p, so saving £1.46
I haven't used SP sausages, would this work, or are they not nice enough?
PS the cereal bars look lovely, will def give those a go
That's what I normally do, Lesley - I am not overly keen on the SP sausages as sausages (they put me in mind of burnt porridge, for some reason) even though they are perfectly edible - but I always use them for sausage rolls and the like, instead of sausagemeat. As I tend to bung some onion and a whole load of "free" HG stuff - herbs, chillies and the like - in, the end result tends to be well yum.0 -

Well i finally made the borscht today. not really weighing anything out but these were the ingredients:
1 large onion
2 packs of smartprice beets
3 cloves garlic chopped
750 ml veg stock
mixed herb
and a wee bit of butter and sugar
Soften onion in butter, chop beetroot and garlic and add 200ml of stock, bring to boil, add herbs sugar and rest of stock and simmer.
Well this is what came out in the end!

Definitely nice but cant have a lot of, its a bizarre sweet and salty taste from the beetroot but definitely satisfying and not high in cals either!0 -

thanks for that link maltesers, looks like a very interesting blog. i like the look of the oatcakes, might try those as I often have leftover porridge (don't have a big appetite at breakfast) - they look like the type of oatcakes I've had in derbyshireweaving through the chaos...0 -
