Off topicness is welcomed
especially when it's thought-provoking! it's really only when we're feeding back thoughts about the recipes that I think we need to stay focussed on our mythical Family
It does actually seem tricky once you get to 7 a day to not have some repeats of the colours, or of the groups which oughtn't to be doubled, and regular 7-9 a day ers must sometimes do repeats?
Penny do you manage to make your 9 all different colours different fruit and veg and not have juice or pulses counting more than once? If so, WOW, and I really need your help!
Looking at the scientific rationale it seems that this is more geared towards people who only manage the 5 a day, but I don't think the masses will let us get away with doubling up if it doesn't say so it the rules:o:). What do people think?
Personally - I cant be doing with checking out exactly how many "colours" I have a day - I just think "if its colourful - it'll do - it must be okay" and just focus on cramming in as many portions of fruit/veg/etc per day as I can stomach basically. So - I would lay emphasis myself on having 9 portions of fruit/veg per day (well...okays...7 for our mythical family perhaps...). My breakfast fruit for instance (ie what I put on my porridge) is probably 1 serving worth and today's is 3 different fruits in just 2 colours - to me I'm still counting it as 3 different things - so take the view "so what?" about it. I'm inclined to think that "doubling up" of colours doesnt matter at all - that its just (as you say) summat that got put in because its difficult enough to get the average Brit in the Street to have 5 portions a day even.
.....goes off wincing at the thought of all the meals I note people having of just a main course at dinner and no separate veg. with it. I dont always manage it myself - but, for instance, when I make the veggie equivalent of spaghetti bolognaise - I have a salad with it as well (so - I've certainly doubled up - eg peas in the "bolognaise" sauce and several different types of green veg in the salad with it AND red tomatoes in the bolognaise sauce and maybe red peppers in the salad).
To me - that colours rule is a "waste of space" frankly. Its just the quantities that matter and having plenty of different types of fruit/veg.0 -
Do please post any recipes. I can't guarantee I'll have the headspace to use them in this monthly planner, but I feel strongly that this plan would fail if we told a UK family that they had to endlessly repeat one month's eating! So I think in my heart that if successful we have to have lots of frugal recipes up out sleeves. Also this is a thread for everyone's benefit, so by posting a frugal recipe, we can all nab it!So yes yes and yes, and that goes for you too :Aprincess Loki, do post your inspired idea here for all to see if you'd like to
Phizzimum I think you suggested that we highlight which recipe we have tested in our post, I think this is an excellent idea and I shall add it to the 'rules'
 - speaking as a computer-illiterate.....I wouldnt know HOW to do highlighting...(as my father says "you just use that computer as a giant reference library".....errr...yep.....sounds about right. I certainly havent actually learnt much at all about the how-to on computer use...
errr....please miss....can I just do summat else - like loadsa and loadsa smilies and/or capital letters....0 -
potty that would be great. Why don't you trawl through for the tart one and the Carrot cake and see how long it takes you, Doing all of them seems like a lot of work! If this thread grows at this rate we'll be struggling to hunt for the individual feedback.

No problem Weezl....
I will knock up a simple spreadsheet to record the findings over the next day or two. I can add more bits to it if needed.
The highlighting idea is great, as it will help me find the findings easier
Or, even using a few ***** to help the post/findings stand out ??0 -

aww ceridwen! Click twice on a word and it will get a blue rectangle around it. Then click the big 'B' in the tool bar at the top of where you're writing, it will make it bold!

i am not sure about highlighting either! how about people put say 'carrot cake - tested as the title'? i do know how to change colour of letters that is the A with a black line under it above the text box you type in. just click on the little arrow before you start to type and you can change the colour to what you would like!it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0 -
Hello all!
Here is my recipe for fatless Farmhouse Tea Loaf:
4oz dried fruit
4oz sugar
1/4 pint of hot tea
3 tablespoons marmalade
1 egg
8oz self raising flour
use a 1lb loaf tin lined with paper
put fruit sugar and tea in bowl and leave overnight
add marmalade, egg and flour - mix
bake in oven for 50-60 mins on 350 deg F
leave to cool and this is best left in a cake tin for around 3 days and then served sliced with butter.
i often make double as it keeps quite well.
this is a super easy cake and i have been making it since i was around 7 years old! i used to have one slice buttered and wrapped in clingfilm in my packed lunch.
also it is quite good for people cutting down on fat as spreading with butter is optional :Tit's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0 -
PS don't worry about the F and V counter, yours is correct. The formula used on that site is not correct for pulses or dried goods, but fine for fresh and frozen. You need to put all your fresh and frozen stuff in, observe the number and then manually add the pulses and dried things.
Do you know how many portions you get from the dried packets and pulses then? I know it's about a tablespoon per portion (for the dried), but how heavy is that? I know I could go weigh a tablespoon couldn't I....?
I'm making meatballs and pasta tonight and have a few ideas on how to frugalise it a bit. I'll see how it goes and let you know. Are you planning on using turkey mince for it (judging by the list)? I'll be using beef mince. Any other ideas most welcomed too
If I get chance I'll type in my trolley to the list today so I can update it when you do yours.2010 Cost of Living Challenge - £901/£5300 * Grocery challenge - £117.91/£120 *Total Debt- [STRIKE]£6388.74[/STRIKE] £5995.66 :eek:Debt Free Reward Pot £11 * Overdraft vs 100 days £363.76/£800 *Feb NSD's 8/120 -
weezl - aww thank you for that message for the girls, I'll show it to them when they come down.
ceridwen (and anyone else who wondered) - honestly, changing the colour is very simple - otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it! If you look above the box you type a post in, there's a big capital A with a black line under it. If you click on the little arrow to the right of the A, a pallette of pretty colours will appear. Just click on the colour of your choice and you can write with it, click back on black when you've finished. does that make sense? I don't know all the techy terms (apart from click!)
soo....carrot cake was a huge success! only made half amount but wish I'd baked more (BOB was right!) I was going to use less sugar but did my normal trick of forgetting I was halving the ingredients! We ate the cake hot last night for pudding - and about half a loaf was eaten by 4 of us. I think the family would have eaten it all, but I said I wanted to try it cold today. So big thumbs up for the cake (when hot - even DD1 who doesn't like oranges or sultanas much loved it. I'll post our review of it cold later.weaving through the chaos...0 -

The 5% recommendation is from USDA not me. I belong to a couple of food preservation yahho groups and that is what everyone on them recommends. 5% and no less for pickles and chutnies.0
