Also, how many hens do you have Nicki to be getting 3 dozen eggs for bartering at this time of the year? My hens aren't laying at all in this weather.
I've only got 3 chicks now but i suppose i'm lucky they have never stopped laying. though i do get the occasional day when i only get 2 eggs.
i'd love some tips too but i dont have a greenhouse so i dont really see what i can do at this time of year and all the snow and ice.Debt at 01/01/2010 £130 MBNA :T

Loving your new thread Nikki
Another question...sorry! Any tips for growing chillis? I was given some free seeds at a restaurant (they give them out instead of free matches...) so I thought I'd give them a try. I'm a flat, so no warm space for mushrooms or outdoor space.. but I'd like to try something. Also I'm quite in love with Nigella's chilli jam recipe.

I plant them in the patio window which seems to work really well I suppose it's like a giant greenhouse but they do need a lot more watering as they dry out really quickly everyday. I do the same with tomatoes and this year and last I have got loads of tomatoes I usually grow moneymakers (an apt name for this challage) lol

I have artic lettuce in the greenhouse which are slow growing but I have 6 pots so normally get one or two portions of lettuce a week I always cut and come again all my lettuce so works quite well wrap them in gardening fleece and also cover them in straw helps with warmth not too conventional but works

my chickens havent stopped laying at all we still get usually 6 eggs a day with the rare occasion of 5 and I only use about 6 a week if that so I'm usually over flowing with eggs and my 6 new chickens come tomorrow so hopefully they will be as successful as the current ones so I am going to have to get bartering more if I end up with 84 eggs a week:eek: lolDebts

Started off well this morning. all house work done, chickens sorted and 2 demi johns of wine made up. couldn't do any more because i havn't got ant more juices. will get some next pay day.
i would really like to get some more chicks but think i'l wait until i can sort the chicken run out and make it a bit bigger. i like them to have a lot of space.
on the self sufficiency side, i'm at a loss as i dont have a greenhouse and nowhere indoors to start anything off. i only have a small bungalow but a quite large garden, about 95ft by 40ft.

Carrieon, Could I enquire what wine you are making. I dabbled a few years back with mixed results (some tasted really yeasty, don't think I left it long enough lol) but still have all the equipment. Also I'm thinking of having 3 chickens on average how many eggs do you get weekly sorry for silly qustion I didn't know they layed less in winter.
Nikki could you PM me the ebay seller please. Good luck with the deposit saving. I wish I had found MSE years ago, I have always been quite frugal but I could cry at the money I have wasted over the years.

Hi Nikki

Things I have done well I got to come home from work at lunch :T thank you snow lol. I have planted a coffee plant  I'll let you know about that one. I have also planted some cauliflower and more leeks in the greenhouse and another 12 tomato plants and started another mushroom box off so bring on the food lol I think I might be eating a lot of lasagne and spag bol withh that lot in a few months. I like to blend up leek as me and lil un don't really like the taste of them and I chuck them in everything near enough. My six chickens turned up today so now I have 12 :T the new ones won't be laying for a few weeks yet. I have to laugh they are really shy and run in and hide like my others used to but they will get used to us and soon will be squarking at us for worms while we are gardening. Got to think of 6 new names now. I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow so better put my thinking cap on
