Truly 'online' card applications? And 'online' loan apps?

There seem to be some cards you can apply for online and get a quick decision. However, are they any (if at all) that are truly online? a) Don't you have to send in verification details afterwards in the post? and b) often, don't you have to deal with someone on the phone who rings you up for further 'verification' stuff that covers questions the online form didn't cover?

In relation to b) - I'm presuming that a) is right, you always have to send in verification afterwards - is it the case that you always get rung by the card company once they've got all your stuff or is that it, after you've sent your ID + address stuff off?

Also, would anyone know what they do with your ID stuff - things like copy of passport, gas bill, letter from the DSS with your NI number saying your on benefits etc...do they bother to check that the passport no is right, that the NI number is right, that the gas bill account no is right etc?! Just wondering. Maybe they just file all the paperwork (shame we have to send it in if so...guess they need to have a look to verify though).

Most card applications work as live systems but if they cannot get an immediate reply from the CRA or out of their service hours then it will refer for decision. So always apply during office hours and you'll see 90% of suppliers offer instant decisions.

They do not check info you send no, they simply see it and make assessment based on what you send. If you 'fabricated' it or similar that's obtaining credit by deception and is illegal so a lot of what you supply is treated as declaration not verification.

They dispose of it 12mth after receipt, not 6yrs like account data but 1yr.

  • Ikes...sorry, not with you mate! it wasn't me who mentioned something about 'fraudulent' applications but the other poster. I'm just someone who likes to be prepared for what they may ask in apps and who doesn't like giving out details that people may not need (where can these things end up, like). You seem to have shot down answers to my thread (also you have done this on my other thread, thanks for that).

Most credit decisions are computerised and most lenders give instant decisions and credit limits to online and telephone applicants without the need for documentation, provided that you have a good credit history and your ID, available credit and so on, can be verified electronically via the Credit Reference Agencies ;)

I've never had to provide ID or anything for a credit card application, but did for some current account applications.

The CRAs collate info from 3 main sources 1) you 2) public records, such as the electoral roll 3) their clients, the lenders.

When completing applications, I would make sure your name and current address matches your details as they appear on the electoral register. Pay particular attention to the way first name(s) as well as surname are recorded. Also a line of your address may be inserted/omitted or the order reversed, where new build, a house name or a block of flats is involved. You'd be surprised how often this happens.

Getting this right obviates the need to produce ID every time you apply for credit/savings accounts. More importantly, some lenders routinely reject applicants whose ID cannot be verified electronically via the CRAs. An extra line inserted in your address (eg. previously unrecorded house name) can immediately kibosh an application ;)

Yeah right whatever. This thread and your other one have got 'fraud' written all over them. Why would anyone be bothered if they check whether the info provided and ID proof sent are genuine or not if they've no intention of doing anything dodgy? Please... we didn't come down in the last shower :rotfl:.

Having being a bit of a naughty boy in the past myself I can spot a "please tell me how to get the banks to give me a load of cash that I can do a moonlight with" thread from a mile off, and this is one of them :rotfl:.
