Once you have heated meat, or any food that ontains bacteria that multiply in warm conditions, you must go on cooking until the dish is done. You could simply use cold ingredients, ie don't brown meat before cooking. In this weather your kitchen will probably be cool enough for the food not to stay cool until the timer kicks in. Personally I would suggest that the electricity saving will be minimal as slow cookers are very cheap to run anyway.

  • Hi:j can someone help me out with soup in the slow cooker.
I have some chicken stock, a collection of very limp veg and a chicken breast(uncooked) How long will it take? would like it ready for tonights dinner. If I add yellow split peas do I need to soak them first? My slow cooker was given to me without instructions:confused: so I would appreciate help.

1kilo of mince(doesn't matter if meat / soya) ( i use the cheapest mince in the supermarket)
    2carrots chopped
    1 tin of tomatoes
handful of red split lentils or 1 handful of porridge oats
    2 onions chopped
    2 cloves of garlic crushed
Put in about a pint of water
    salt, pepper
    herbs (optional)

Shove in slow cooker on low for about 6hours or on the cooker till it becomes thick but may need more water on the cooker.

I then split this up onto 4/6 meals, depending on what we have.
You can then use the mince to make bolognese, chilli (just add kidney beans and chilli powder), lasagne etc
As your doing the meals just bulk up with veg to make it more filling.

Buy a whole chicken, roast it as usual.
Strip the leftover meat off and use it in other meals e.g curry, sandwiches, wraps etc
Boil the chicken carcass and use it to make a stock and use it to make soup etc.
Out of a chicken i make about 5 meals out of it.

Try and buy bulk pasta and rice it will cheaper in the long run and is great for bulking out meals. Hope it helps

    sausage casserole:-

8 sausages (veggie or meat) as many as you like
    4 carrots
    3 small onions,
    hand-full of sweet corn,peas whichever
2 hand fulls of red lentils or brown lentils
1 1/4 pint of hot water with beef oxo in,
    strips of cabbage
    1/2 swede diced
    2 parsnips chopped

I put all of the ingredients in the slow cooker and put onto low, i put it on about 8 am and its done by 5pm.

    Dumplings:-
    4 oz self raising flour
    2 oz suet
    pinch of salt
    bit of water.

If wanted you could have dumplings with it mix ingredients together till dumpling like and drop them into the slow cooker for 30 mins.

Then serve, sometimes i do this with mash or as is.

    Spiced lentil and coconut soup

    2tbsp olive oil
    1 onion chopped
    2 garlic cloves crushed
    1 carrot grated
    1 tsp ground cumin
    1 tsp ground coriander
    175g / 60z of red lentils
1 3/4 pint of veg stock
    salt and pepper
    2 leeks thinly sliced
    200ml of coconut milk
    chilli powder (optional)

Heat oil and fry onion, garlic and carrot for about 3 mins
add spices and cook for a further 3mins
Put the sauce into the slow cooker stir in lentils, stock, seasoning and leeks.
wait till 30 mins before its done to put the coconut milk in.
    Cooking 5-7 hours in low.

    LENTIL SOUP
    1 large onion chopped
    4 carrots finely diced
    1 sticks of celery diced
    4 cups red lentils
    can of chopped tomatoes
    2 pints veg stock
    basil
    salt / black pepper

    low 8hrs ish

Chop potatoes, parsnips, celeriac into small chuncks (optional, choose what veg you like if any)
Place chicken on top cover with lid put on low for 8 - 10 hours.

No need to put water in as the juices from the meat cook both the chicken and veg.
