re: Greedy Gas/Elec Companies: I Have An Evil Plan

It could be tricky but i feel it could shake up the entire industry IF it could work We the consumer decide to kill one of the big 6 companies. hear me out.. If every single customer with, say British Gas decided to switch away from them, thus killing British Gas off completely, surely this would send a shockwave through the industry? I think this could be an answer to the great rip-off, and bring on a far more competitive and customer-friendly industry? Not sure how to implement this, but maybe some of you do? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I've more chances of winning the lottery jackpot twice in a row than this happening.

British Gas are cheapest for me - are you going to pay the increase in my costs as a result of your boycott? Do you what you like with the others, but you'll find people like me with all the main companies!

Reducing the market from 6 big players to 5 will increase competitiveness how exactly?

Leaving aside the discussion of whether or not this is justified for any one supplier over another for the moment, your solution is what we in the IT trade sometimes refer to as "boiling the whole ocean at once". Getting 'everyone' to switch can't be done. It's probably not much more likely that you could get a statistically significant number of people to switch, especially when you consider they'd respond to something like this, and other people would be switching to your targeted supplier away from another supplier they were annoyed with.

  • Thanks a lot for that, Its a nice thought not:mad:!!!! You do realise that if this happened 19,000 people would lose their jobs don't you????? I'm one of them and although I agree that BG can be a nightmare at time both for employees and customer, I don't think I deserve to end up on the unemployment line. If you have a problem with BG why don't you give us a call and see if we can do anything to sort it out??? We get paid to help people if they are having problems with their accounts although from the amount of abuse we frequently get from the public/general media at large you'd never know it. Rather than suggesting getting rid of BG why don't you try talking to some of our millions of happy customers whom we've helped!!!! Durrrr...... sorry but the op has made me really cross.
loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!
  • I agree the plan is doomed to failure but I do like the sentiment behind it (not the inevitable loss of jobs if it atually happened, of course). There are millions of customers in the UK with no real voice here but that's mostly their own fault, I suppose. That's why get such cr*p service/rip-off prices in the UK - we don't stand up for ourselves.

I'm just happy to keep switching supplier 4 times per year for up to £300 cashback/discount off my bill. It's really the ONLY way an individual can stick it to them, I suppose...

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Deej321 has the right idea. I don't think British Gas should be the target as I did a comparison and found they are the cheapest for me and I've read a lot of people are switching to their click energy 6 deal because they are offering the best deal. The companies to be targetted should be the dearest! Over on another forum a lot of Tesco customers are walking away because they are finding their prices dearer than Sainsburys or Asda and the online codes have been whittled away. The shoppers are voting with their feet and it won't be long before Tesco take notice if enough people have taken this stance.

If more people moved away from the dearer suppliers then we'd see more better price deals. I wonder if there could ever be a 'run' on energy companies like there have been with banks!
  • The only reason BG is the cheapest on Click 6 is their cynical way of superseding their Ckick tariffs every few months, launching a new, cheaper Click tariff whilst leaving their existing, loyal customers on the old and uncompetitive click tariff. Effectively, their loyal customers are paying for BG to recruit new customers via the switchjing sites...BG are NOT the good guys.

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Oh I don't doubt that for a minute, but I really can't see an alternative way to get the energy companies to sit up and take notice of their customers.
