3G coverage

Hi
Can someone help me? Am I right?

I really want an iPhone, but get no O2 coverage so that's out.

So then I thought an Samsung Omnio would do. However, I have checked other networks coverage, and although mostly there is 2G coverage, none have 3G coverage. Does that mean I wouldn't be able to do stuff on the internet?

thanks
Shona

you can connect through wifi in your own home instead? you need to ave a wireless router (£30-40 depending on whether you are BT or similar or cable)

You can then use 3G if you're out and about (check signals in areas you frequent), and wifi at home, and at certain places on the high street for free too.

we have 3G coverage for vodafone on the omnia, and yet my 3g card (also vodafone) for the laptop (work) doesn't (work)

have you checked reviews for both phones? depending on which you go for, the answers should be the same for the iphone

remember £90 quidco cashback on the omnia via vodafone, so you're £190 up on buying one over an iphone from day 1.

Ah - I never thought about wi-fi, which I have, so that'd be fine.
I get vodafone coverage and a bit of t-mobile/orange, so an iphone is out really as I wouldn't get calls at home.
But would you recommend the Omnia? It looks great (if a little long, but I guess you can't otherwise have a big screen)...

i thought they were roughly the same size? omnia is probably thicker.

it runs windows, so for me (or in this instance my wife) the interface is easy to use. I've never used Apple products with the exception of an ipod.

it's touch sensitive, but they give you a stylus, and it's got a mouse pad.

I'd suggest going and having a look at one in your local store if possible? then if you like it ordering online of course for the quidco. also, going through quidco you'll get a code for a free bluetooth headset.

have a look at the reviews online though. it's going to be a question of personal choice.

My mate has an iphone (well he did have, in for repair at the mo!) because he loves his ipod, so he thought combine the 2.
All his existing ipod docks (house boom box, garage boombox, car kit, pc and mac) - do not charge the iphone! This is either apple being very sneaky and getting all their loyal customers to buy even more kit again, or incredibly p*** poor design - my money is clearly on the former.
Contract - hasn't incurred any additional costs yet, so happy with his £35/pm.
Still can't bluetooth anyone - why?!

Simple things like being able to choose ring/sms/alert tones - can't change them on the phone? You can if you have a mac and use garage (but it's not straightforward) but that seems like an awful lot of work for something that even the cheapest phones offer?

Limited to apps via itunes, so if apple don't like the app then it ain't going on the iphone!
Interface is fast, and this is the showstopper for me - the reason it's fast is it only runs one app at a time. You are playing a game (the accelerometers are great) when the phone rings, you are dumped out of the game, no save or option to pause, the game is closed and you have the option to answer or not.
This is the same with all of the apps.
So you might have google maps showing you the way through a strange city, but you can't speak to your hotel who might be able to tell you the car park is actually underground and is accessed via an ordinary looking garage door!!

I have a few other gripes but overall he is happy and so that makes me happy!

But when I said I was getting an omnia and would be putting mobile shell, tomtom, skype and other bits on his face kind of fell a bit!
Redeeming feature so far though is no bsod on the iphone, so I'll cede that point! It is a stable os.
4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.

According to the coverage map we DO get O2, but we both had O2 phones when we moved here, and there was no signal, and various visitors with O2 have the same problem.
I have Macbook, iPod etc, so do like the Apple way, but I currently have a Samsung U600, and I do like it too.
Could I download iTunes onto the Omnia?

I agree with most of your points but the one about not being able to use apps while in a call is incorrect. I have quite comfortably accessed Google Maps, Weather, Mail and Notes as well as my games while in a call, albeit with the audio switched to the call. The reason for this is that the software handling the phone calls runs alongside the other software all the time (otherwise the phone would only work inside the Phone application).

You seem to enjoy customizing your phone a lot so I don't see you being very happy with buying an iPhone unless you jailbreak it :p For customizability I am thinking of switching to Windows Mobile as well, though the seamlessness of the music player in the iPhone make it a rather difficult choice. Perhaps after reading a few reviews on the Xperia X1....

when was the last time you tried an o2 phone, maybe they've installed new masts around there
if you really want the iphone, phone o2 up and ask them about the reception, if they say it should be ok, purchase it on the phone. once you recieve it see how it goes within the first 14 days, if it's rubbish send it back under the 14 day cooling off period, distant selling act. confirm with o2 about the cooling off period just to be sure
