I've booked a hotel and they have told me I can have access to their 'free' Wi Fi, I have a newish laptop and was wondering how I go about receiving it. I understand they will have to give me some code, but that's all I know!

Have you turned the WiFi on? There's a WiFi icon near the clock (little PC). Double click to open that. There should be a list of available WiFi networks. Click on the one which is your hotel. Then open any webpage (like google). A message might come up saying to enter code or pay. If not, your webpage should open normally.
  • Hi,

Just a quick note.Always be careful when using free wireless the Hotel one will be ok, but it's easy for a person to be sitting in their room with a fake free wireless network which you might join by mistake. If you have any problems see the front desk just to confirm that you have joined the right one. Its very surprising how many people will try to connect to a "free" wireless network.

    Heed his advice ^^^

If you don't know where the wi-fi is coming from, then be very careful with what you do on it. As mentioned, its fairly simple to set up your own free wifi service. Then, when people connect to it, everything they send is sent through your laptop, and they'll be able to see your passwords (Unless your using https, I think).

Never do anything involving banking or use of your cards (credit or debit) on a wireless network unless you know for certain that it is secure.

The one in your hotel will probably not even be encrypted.

Even if you use the WiFi to surf, use an old fashioned (but safe) dial-up connection for anything involving money or which obliges you to provide personal details.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

lots of hotels have free wi-fi, but most now need a password to get access, ask at the lobby and they give you a little slip, if not all the easier but less secure I guess.

Talking of wi-fi and off topic, I wonder if its against the rules to share your internet connection with neighbours? I can see about six networks from my house, I guess we're all paying about £10 a month each, it would be a bargain if we all shared the cost of one network.

You'd probably have to read your contract. Its probably not allowed, but it would be extremely difficult for the ISP to realise. Plus, if they download illegal things using your network, you can be held responsible, it doesn't matter if its movies or indecent pictures of children!
If its your connection, you are responsible for what people view on it.

re #5 If you used a live cd (ubuntu) for transactions, would you still be
    chancing it.

It shouldn't matter which OS you use, all the data will be sent to the router running the wi-fi connection. If someone's set up their laptop to run it, everything goes through their laptop. Encryption should make you safer, but its not a risk you should really take.
But again, if you are 100% certain that its the hotel's wi-fi, and its a well known company, you should be safe.

Yea, I regularly end up staying in hotels, but only the minority are free!!! Some have just unencryted networks (i.e, you don't need to enter a WEP or WPA key) but as above the majority you need to get a username and password from reception which is normally randomly generated and will definitely need writing down (such as a34j4k38:@43jjklla etc!!)

Thanks everyone for your advice, the hotel said they would give me a code,so it seems a bit more secure, as mentioned not sure if I'd like to use internet banking!
Just had a look at my network connections and one is coming up showing Sky+ some numbers! I have Sky TV, unless someone is on the Sky wi fi connection.
