I would get free consultation from both Clinique and Clarins instore if you have those counters in your local. They should both give you some samples to try out at home so you can see what works for you.
My DSGF uses Clinique, it sounds like you both have similar skin, and she swears by it.
Unfortunately the Clinique SAs are paid to think that every Clinique product is perfect and that if something says, e.g. it's for oily skin, it will definitely work on your oily skin. This is not always the case!
Example: The 3 step system. This is so well advertised it's usually the 1st thing people go for. All the SAs are extremely well-versed in reccommending you products, but all they're really doing is reading the blurbs on the boxes, which you could do yourself. The system is such a success because it seems so simple: wash, tone and moisturise with these and only these products and then your skin will be perfect .
Wash
For years, the only option was bar soap, which (even though it's made by clinique ) is a completely outdated way to wash your face. It's just common knowledge that soap makes the skin tight and dry, and clinique's is no different. Now they've moved onto liquid facial soaps which are much better because they don't contain any detergent cleansing ingredients and as such are gentle to the skin.
The exception to this is the oily skin forumla which contains menthol, which is a tested skin irritant (link). Only, if you went for a skin consultation with oily skin the SA would happily tell you to use the oily skin formula, and I doubt she would even know about the menthol.
Tone
I see some people have noticed the clarifying lotion to not be all it's cracked up to be, and I'm really not surprised it's given people such bad reactions. Between the 4 "specially formulated... custom-fit" Clarifying lotions, there is barely any difference in the ingredients, these are the main ones in formula 1:- Water
- Alcohol Denat. There's no two ways about it: denatured alcohol is drying and irritating for the skin. Don't get me wrong, you may have used products with this in and not felt anything but a tingle, but this just means your skin is strong and healthy enough to fight it off, but it certainly isn't making it any better.
- Glycerin A good moisturising ingredient which could go some way to reverse the damage done by the alcohol.
- Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) A major player in the Anti-Blemish range (along with alcohol which is why I would not recommend this range) which can be a good antioxidant which is great - BUT it contains lots of alcohol and for that reason I would avoid it.
The exception (as there usually is with clinique, which makes it more confusing) is the Mild Clarifying Lotion which doesn't contain any alcohol or other irritants, and can exfoliate the skin.
Moisturise
There are only 2 options for this, the Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion (if you have dry skin) and Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel for oilier skins. I have said this before, but the Lotion is not dramatic or different! It doesn't contain any irritants, but what it does contain is cheap, standard oils (inc. vaseline), colours and preservatives and is definitely not worth the money! Yes, it will moisturise, but so will any other moisturiser from nivea, olay etc. who wouldn't charge this much.
The Gel is different, and is recommended as it contains antioxidants and anti irritants (as I said in an earlier post, the men's version is exactly the same ingredients and cheaper). Incidentally, it has 3 times as many ingredients as the gel, which is an instant indicator of a more advanced formula - some of the best and most expensive clinique moisturisers have 50+ ingredients!
So, I suppose what I'm trying to say is that some of the Clinique products are good and some really aren't, but when you have the consultation you'll be told a lot of simplified information (though strangely, not much about the actual ingredients) and be stuck with whatever products the advertising dept at Clinique have said are 'good for your type of skin'.
I'm really sorry for going on, but I could write an essay on clinique (as I have done before on here!) but I just don't want people to get sucked in by what the skin care 'experts' at Clinique tell you.
I would recommend Clinique's Anti-Blemish range if you still get occasional blemishes like me. I haven't yet found anything to help acne scars, but Clinique's Anti-Blemish range is wonderful on oily skin, I LOVE the clarifying lotion! One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you!
