Tiscalli Questions

Options
Hello,

I am new to the forums and see lots of bad press about tiscalli broadband and phone.

I was rather hoping to change over to them as I am currently paying BT £10.50 for line rental and £17.99 for a 5 GB capped broadband service (Going up to 10 in July). With the invention of BBC iPlayer and 4OD I find myself struggling to keep to it. I also have a rather old wireless router.

I was wanting to take advantage of the tiscalli phone + unlimited broadband service. It would be £10 for 3 months and then £15 thereafter, I don't have to pay bt line rental plus I get a free wireless router to replace my old one. I am living here for 14 more more months so that comes to £195 rather than BT's £399 which sounds good.

I used to be with tiscalli a couple years ago and had no problems what so ever. I was wondering if anyone else had made a switch similar to what I was hoping to do and if they had any problems, or preferribly if anyone had done this switch and it all went as smoothly as promised.

ps. is it true that if say the next person who moves into this flat wants to start a bt line after I have moved out they need to pay a whoping big connection fee as I moved to tiscalli for phone?

thank you in advance

I made the switch from Tiscali to BT after 5 years of relatively trouble free service with Tiscali (Lineone previous name). Only when I had a problem, no connection for 4 weeks, did I realise how poor Tiscali were. 10 phone calls to Tiscali no progress. Signed up with BT and problem resolved in 2 hours. BT even phoned to ensure I was happy with problem resolution.

Sheslookinhot has highlighted one of the Tiscali problems that of poor and expensive customer service when/if problems occur.
However the thing that might affect you more is their Fair Usage Policy, despite them claiming downloads are unlimited, if you actually try that and download loads they can slow down your connection which makes downloading nearly impossible, especially at peak times.
Just to answer your second question, if your line is "unbundled" to Tiscali, which it will be to get this deal then anyone wishing to return to BT will be required to pay Bt anything up to the normal connection charge currently £124.99.
  • I did this earlier this year - phone line would not work properly, calls disconnected, crackled and cut off, caller display did not work all the time, 1471 and voicemail were intermittent. Tiscali sent 3 Openreach engineers and each one traced the problem back to Tiscali's equipment. Tiscali eventually admitted they had no idea how to fix the problems, released me from the contract and paid £350 compensation after I asked for £500. Not until after they had disconnected my broadband three weeks before BT took the line back over though.

My advice - stay well away and tell all your friends to do the same!
  • Thank you all,

I have heard nothing good at all about tiscali in a lot of searching. I decided to phone bt and say i thought about switching and they offered to give me unlimited broadband for only £2 more a month and a free home hub.

I know you are probably all slapping your heads as I am now paying more but I desperately wanted a new router and unlimited downloads. I've had no problems with bt for years, you can't put a price on piece of mind really.

    Thanks for all your advice.

    Hi
I think you've done right, we were with Tiscali (I wont get started on how bad they were as have said it all on another thread :rotfl: )
We have now gone back to bt and think they are worth paying more. As someone else said with Tiscalis unlimited usage we were always getting e-mails saying we were using it too much, which we werent anyway. We were without broadband quite alot for various reasons when we were with them and their customer service dept were appalling.
  • Tried to switch to them because my old ISP was expensive
Got MAC off old provider and signed up on Tiscali website using the MAC.
Got 2 emails confirming registration and order.
Tiscali website and CSA on the phone promised a max 30 minute loss of service on connection day during the switch.
Connection day came a my ADSL connection dropped.
I waited 30 minutes and still nothing.
I then waited 24 hrs and rang them the next day.
They informed me that there was a problem or fault and they would fix it and have me connected in 7 days.
I said forget it, give me a mac code, I'm switching back to my old ISP.
They told me to ring back 3 days later for the MAC code.
Ring back 3 days later - sorry sir there has been no MAC code requested for you - not only that they had also left their order on my line - they have only just cancelled that order on Tuesday this week and now they have left tags on my line stopping me from getting any other broadband.
Still today they are trying to remove the tags claiming each time that they have had system problems.
I have had no broadband for 22 days now and seemingly cannot do a thing about it.

Just had a beauty! Last months riscali bill showed separate line bill from broadband bill, after they gave me back £20 for loss of 6 weeks broadband use I had already paid for in March. Emailed them and got them to respond, and they phoned this morning. I am no longer on the £19.99 package I signed up for, and if I want it, I must go on their website and requerst it!

The woman in India was working from a script, as she never deviated a vowel from the mantra she spouted. Trying to get to her to realise my problem was a waste of time.

My opinion, leave this company well alone, unless you enjoy stress and hassle.
