If you want to cut costs use sunflower seeds instead of pinenuts...very tasty and a fraction of the price;)

of course! very nutty and not too sweet! Brilliant. Aril, I think they taste slightly less oily than the pine nuts, would we chuck in an extra lug of oil d'you think?

Can you not just add a teeny bit at a time ?
You can always put more in, but cant take it back out again. ;)

yes, I think you're right nopot2pin, first a teeny bit, then a lug, then a jollop. Ah these technical terms we have for our recipes ;)

the pesto I adapted from delia's version, but (untypically) swapped for cheaper things. A very mature and slightly smoky cheese would be cheaper to use than pecorino or parmesan, but when blitzed, I didn't notice a difference.

Still experimenting with whether anything can substitute for pine nuts. Almonds would be the right colour, but too sweet. Macadamias might work, but they're even pricier! Chick peas are quite nutty, so maybe an oilier version of a houmous stirred into the basil mix. Now that could be seriously BTS!:rotfl:

    Toodle pip,

We quite commonly use almonds over here (and by we I mean most people I know) in pesto. Takes a bit more oil, but no taste difference.

Thanks softstuff! Useful tip. Is it not a little sweeter than the pine nut kind? Are pine nuts really pricy in Australia?

Some thoughts on magnesium… Brace yourselves:

    found this here

‘Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries.‘

Ah! Hadn’t really rated it as a known dietary risk. Also pretty hard to find out about it on the internet. Everyone wants to tell you what’s low fat, low carb, low calorie. Seem to ignore that low-mineral can contribute to many health nasties. Surely this costs the NHS loads each year, while we continue to hear endlessly about just eating less fat?

    Political rant over.

    Back to the magnesium facts…

Good news for those of us in hard tap water areas: there’s 50 mg per litre in hard tap water. more about that here

Our RDA of magnesium: Mr weezl 420mg weezl 320 mg, this is slightly increased as we are over 31, find yours here:

Another useful resource is a full list of foods ranked from most magnesium and decreasing here:
So how are we both doing for daily magnesium?

Both get 110 mg in our 4 slices of HM wholemeal bread. Drinking 2 litres of tapwater would give another 100 mg, 75 mg in our daily lentils when we have them.

Mr Weezl gets 124 mg in his daily 70g raw weight serving of porridge oats

26 mg comes from our milk in tea and coffee

20 more from half a can of tomatoes.

As an interesting side thought, a woman over 31 could meet her daily magnesium requirements by only consuming 40 of Twinks hobnobs daily. A few of my friends on the grocery challenge are manfully attempting this on occasion!

Buckwheat yields the best bang for your buck (geddit?!) (19.6p / 100g asda organics, n.b ceridwen!)

A 100g breakfast serving of this stuff, made into kasha, (anyone tried this, please post what it tastes like!?) would give me 2/3rds of my daily requirement.

With a third of a can of spinach (natco large can 69p) would be my lot for the day.

Saag bhaji on a bed of buckwheat as an evening meal anyone?

Bulghur wheat is nearly as good.

Rice, our staple grain in the Weezl house is nowhere near as good, a measly tenth of my daily needs in one large serving.

An ounce of nut butter made with brazil nuts would give me a third of my RDA and Mr weezl a quarter, so I’m intrigued by another potential healthy sandwich filler.

    Tatty bye for now lovelies.

    Weezl x
p.s ceridwen, re: your earlier post about organic price premium, I did an average shop on mysupermarket, but clicking only on organic stuff. I reckon it multiplied everything by 5 times:eek: How do you cope?!;) Also, it seems harder to get 'bog standard' stuff that's organic. What's that all about? Cheapest vinegar 15p a bottle. Cheapest organic vinegar ( but it's made with red wine), £1.32. Organic seems marketing jargon for 'extra special' surely not the point??

I didn't find it sweet at all, pine nuts are $3.67 for a 25g bag, whilst slivered almonds were $2.99 for 125g. So there's no going back for me!

Now if only I could get my basil to grow a bit faster!

    Hi weezl

I hadnt realised I was paying THAT much of a price premium - whew! Could explain why I'm thinking "that sounds INCREDIBLY cheap" about the prices you are quoting!

Lets just say I'm not very well paid (to say the least) - but I am very motivated:D

PS; I've started up a blog (see my homepage here) - yesterday to be precise! - and I'm planning on giving a blogroll of fave blogs on it (when I can figure out how!) - with a sub-section for my MSE friends. So - just a little hint - should you ever do a blog at any point, theres a space there mentally-speaking that "has your name on it".
