Buying Land off the local Council
Not sure if I'm in the right place, but here goes! We've rented our back garden off the local council for 9 years (£40 pa). We've tried to buy it on numerous occasions, but this request was always turned down. Now the council want to sell the land to us for £4,000. The land is tiny (approx 4 x 6m). They are openly…

Magic Corner Pull Out Storage Units - worth bothering with?
Two of our base units are deep corner units, so Wickes gave quoted for one Le mans pull out unit and one magic corner pull out wirewirk units. At over £500 for the two, I'm wondering if they're actually worth bothering with? Do they cut down on the available space? One would be for tins etc and the other for crockery. Any…

Electric Shower problems
Hi and thanks for reading this. I have recently had a complete house overall, included a new bathroom. Part of this included getting an electric shower which I was advised was very powerful. Anyway it seemed to be working for the first 3 days of use (not pumping powerful but a reasonable flow of water coming from the…

Split level lounge - cost of making one level?
Our lounge is around 30ft long and an area about 8ft long is raised with a step up and used a dining area. The house was built on 1970 when this kind of thing was fashionable but we're hoping there's original floorboards underneath the step. We are having our kitchen done shortly so really want to get rid of the raised…

Black on stainless steel kitchen appliances with off White kitchen?
We've decided on an off White/pale cream kitchen with black quartz worktops. Got to choose an American fridge freezer and 90cms range oven now and I'd initially chosen black for both. Will it be black overload though do you think or would I be better sticking with stainless steel? Any experiences? Thanks

Building own shed - Floor Advise
Hey all, My first post, and by the looks of the site the first of many. I have decided to build my own shed, mainly due to the odd shape and the cost of a custom build. I had a concrete pad placed last year while having an additional car port installed. My question is; what is the best method of constructing the floor? Do…

4 Slice Toaster - Any Recommendations?
I need a new toaster - I wanted to replace our old one as it's all crumby and leftover from our student days anyway and now its started fusing the electrics so I've got a proper excuse! I've looked at various places online but its a minefield - a toaster should be a toaster, but there are so many with negative reviews I…

low energy halogens
We had a flooded bathroom a couple of years ago, resulting in an insurance job which replaced the ceiling of the dining kitchen. I took the opportunity while the plasterboard was down to wire for halogen spots, of which I've fitted 10. I started out with the 20W bulbs, but it was a bit dim (even with the 200W of power) so…

Extension costs: Garage vs Habitable Room
We are building an extension which will almost double the size of our 2bed end terraced house. When I spoke with the architects, they said it was likely to cost £80-£90k, as it was 5m x 8m and on two floors. They said that they get that from a ballpark £1000-£1200 per square metre. Now that my plans are done, the size is…

Under Floor Ventilation - Solid Walls
Hi, We live in a flat in a converted Victorian terrace (ground floor) with suspended wooden floors. We have been told there is not enough cross ventilation under the floor and to replace and increase the existing air bricks (too small and not enough). My query is that the ones at the front of the property are above the sub…

Which flooring is best in a bathroom, tiles, lino or carpet. Have got all walls tiled and now need to do the floor and wonder what the pros + cons are for each?
