Old Family Recipe

Options
Hi
i dont know if any one can use this but i discovered this recipe among some sewing items by grandad gave me.the recipe belonged to my late nannar.i have made four in the last few days to fill my 4 kids and husband its really filling and v.easy to make.

nannar margs sultana loaf
1 cup sugar
1 cup sultanas
1 cup of milk
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 lb butter
1 beaten egg
2 cups self raising flour

put marg sugar sultanas and milk in pan bring to boil, cool then add tartar, egg and flour pour into lined loaf tin cook on 160 for half hour then 150 for 1 hour.
may take less time to cook i had to convert this to my oven temps from the old reg settings on the recipe so you will have to see how that works for you,but its really nice when its cooled down.

  • oh i meant to say i havent used the tartar when ive been making it but it turned out fine without it
  • Thank you for sharing this recipe katiejane. It sounded familiar to me so I went and looked it up. I have it too, a friend gave it to me, but she called it Belgian loaf, why I don't know.
Anyway I used to make it regularly at one time, must try it again.

The recipe I was given uses exactly the same ingredients but without the cream of tartar. And cooking time is 1 hour at 170 - 180 degC.

I've got this recipe, too - but it uses bicarb of soda instead of tartar and it requires two teaspoons of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.

Soak the sultanas in some cold tea to make them plump up nice and juicy.

It's called Nanna's Boiled fruit cake in this house. It's quick, moist and keeps well. I haven't done it for ages, so thanks for the reminder.

    All the best

    Katie,

I have this recipe, too. I don't like tea breads or anything like that but this is absolutely delicious. Even my baby daughter loves it.

Oh, and I don't use the cream of tartar either :)

I have a similar recipe. It doesn't matter what size cup you use i usually use a mug as long as you use the same one for all your ingridients. Hope i haven't confused you.
