White Satin Paint - Stay White

Hi there

Has anyone ever found a white satin paint that actually stays white ? I am going to repaint all my woodwork this spring and I am tired of doing all that work just to have it turn yellow in a few months.

We are both non smokers so it's not that.

I use Dulux quick drying gloss (I think they do do Satin too?) It does stay white, dries quickly and washes out of brushes. I find it quite hardwearing too.

I believe it's the oils used in gloss which makes it go yellow, especially in warm environments?

Funny you should mention the paint going yellow we had our kitchen painted a year ago and went for a satin wood finish as I prefer it to gloss it has gone a creamy colour we notice it when the door opens into the playroom as the paint in there is gloss and was painted a least 3 years ago. we don't smoke either. The quick dry gloss I used somewhere but it did'nt cover very well!

I've used B&Qs own satinwood white and it has stayed white. It's water based so the brushes are easy to clean too.

Oh, it stinks in the pot but seems ok when it is drying on the wood if you see what I mean.

Dulux Quick Drying in Satinwood (drys in 6h and has "anti-yellow" in it). It's water sol too, so no need for nasty turps!

We're coming to the end of repainting our flat. We're using the same materials as the spec sheet lists as original finishes (we bought the flat new). We've been here over 4 years and the window sills etc we're almost perfectly white... No noticable areas of yellow when putting the fresh coats on...

Done the whole of this place, August 2006, using B&Q satin - was best value then - everything still looks good. Easily cleaned, too.

Glad to see Dulux going water based, as the higher price & the fact it was oil & longer to dry/clean up after put me off buying it!

It was all new timber we had, not sure how good at covering.staying white, over previously painted surfaces.

water based paint is generally more expensive than oil based

everyone thats paint has gone yellow, did you use white or brilliant white?
ive a feeling that brilliant white tends to yellow quicker than white

Ive been using Dulux pure brilliant satinwood i think it must be oil based this year and its looking very creamy already, didnt realise you could get a water based one! can you over paint my existing efforts with the water based one?? How do you tell the oil based ones as opposed to the water based ones?

White paint yellows due to lack of exposure to UV light - so window sills tend to not yellow, unless you put something on them such as a plant pot or ornament.
