Can't Remove Toilet Seat

Hi,
I'm really struggling to remove the toilet seat at my mum's house. It has no obvious button(s) to click and isn't one you pull off vertically. There are also no fittings when you look underneath the toilet.
The hinges go out to the side so I was trying to push them inwards but they wont go in enough to remove the seat.
Any ideas how I can remove the seat? (sorry if my description is rubbish)
