Restricted hours tarrif

Options
My grandad still has his air duct heating systems from the 70’s. His current energy plan is with E-on on a restricted hours tarrif giving him four different time periods throughout the day to use his system and get cheaper energy. E-on have said he can no longer have a restricted hours tarrif and can only off him a standard variable or economy 7 , 8 or 10. Has anyone got an idea of the best company to go to for this kind of heating system. I’ve done a bit of research online but the suggestions is he would have to have new meters fitted and the tarrif system is complicated. He is 85 and I live miles away so companies won’t speak to me to help him sort it out, is there any way round this or a charity who would help him get it sorted?

Have him register for E.On's Priority Service Register and then print and get him to sign their Letter of Authority so that you can act on his behalf.

In the meantime there is presumably nothing to stop you doing research in your own name to see whether other companies can still offer the same service that he has at present.

Lots of these old tariffs are being withdrawn and most used to be specific to the old electricity company for that area (old 14 PES areas) so there is little if no competition or option but to move to the more common tariff for E7 which ever supplier offers as far as I know. E8/E10 etc are again tariffs with limited choice.
Fitting new meters would be down to the supplier to do so that should not be an issue.

Grandad needs to find out if his system will cope with only 7 hours overnight heating. (I doubt it will.) He needs to wait until January, then switch off the storage after breakfast, then put it back on at bedtime. Repeat for a few weeks.

If that works okay, go for Economy 7. If not warm enough, go for Economy 10.

It's all explained by vraious posts such as this..

[ oh dear, looks like I'm not allowed to post links, even to this site, but I found it via the forum search function]

Eon have a specialist team who can assist you. As I understood it, it seems the metering your grandad currentlly has is so old that it needs replacing for safety reasons, and no one makes that type of metering anymore.

However, Eon have a specialist team dealing with it, who can advise all the alternatives available and what may be best for your grandad, but it will be up to your grandad what solution he wants.

Your grandad will need to contact Eon to allow you to act on his behalf in this matter, if that is what he wants. But you don't seem to know any more about this than your grandad.

Hello HelenMack and welcome to the Forums.

Some good advice on here already - thanks all. Please use the links Gerry1 has posted so your grandad can give his permission for you to look after his account. This only needs to be done once. As soon as it's logged on the account you'll be able to deal with any future issues or queries.

Restricted Hour Tariff (RHT) metering set-ups were originally designed for all electric properties with storage heaters and water immersion heaters. To work, meters are wired directly into the heating/hot water circuits at properties. This lets them automatically switch the storage heaters/hot water on and off during the off-peak times.

We no longer support this type of metering and are looking to replace them. As Centage says, we've a specialist team dealing with these meter exchanges. This is our Simpler Metering team and they'll be happy to go through the options available. These include Economy 10, Economy 7 or single rate.

I suspect Economy 10 is the closest to the current set-up. They give 10 hours of cheaper off-peak electricity for heating and hot water. This is split into three periods at night, during the afternoon and in the evening. The afternoon and evening periods 'top up' the stored heat to help properties stay warm throughout the day. With the latest two-rate Economy 10 meters, all electricity used during the off-peak hours will be charged at the cheaper rates.

As spiro says, with Economy 10, the choice of tariff is limited; whereas, with Economy 7 and single rate, there's a greater choice available both with us and with the other suppliers. Our Simpler Metering team will go through these options to agree what's best for your grandad including what impact each option is likely to have on his heating and hot water. There's no charge to exchange the meter whichever options is chosen.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction HelenMack.
