Just saved over 17 on a ticket listed as 50 to travel from Liverpool to Oxford and back. Exactly the same trains and operators. Why can't National Rail give you the best prices?

Because National Rail don't sell tickets, or set all the fares. The fare(s) you paid will, in all inevitability, be operator specific fares. As Kite2010 stated, Welcome to the crazy world of (split) ticketing. It's a consequence of our hopelessly split and disorganised rail system
