Depends when your booking is as you will have to apply to get the status via SPG first and then match it. Recently it only took about a week.

5 weeks should be enough time.

    1. Take out SPG and Marriott membership before hand.
    2. Take out the Amex platinum (referral can be given if needed, PM me)
    3. Apply for gold status for SPG inputting your membership no..then just wait

Do you think you could post a link to the terms and conditions of this 'upgrade feature' as without this information nobody will be able to answer the question.
It seems odd to apply for a charge card with a £450 annual fee just to get some sort of room upgrade at a hotel when you know absolutely nothing about the terms of such an upgrade.
Difficult to answer you without knowing the full details of this feature but I have a feeling that the answer is probably no as it is highly likely the reservation will need to be made through Amex travel service to qualify.

I think he is referring to being gold with SPG and Marriott. Perks of which are a room upgrade
