Artemis Strategic Assets

Anyone still in this or have an opinion? I took a smallish punt when it launched because Littlewood made me an absolute bomb in the 90s in Jupiter Income (consistently even beating Woodford). He then had a decade or so sabbatical, presumably burnt out somewhat. After 3 years from launch or so of the Artemis I gave up because it just wasn't going anywhere. It is still in the HL 150 (which I know doesn't mean anything) even though it hasn't even managed to even beat the All Share for years (which perhaps tells you all you need to know about HL's 150).

I can't help feeling that the drop and recovery of an outperforming fund might be better long term - unless there is a decade long sideways or drooping market?

Basically how long do you stick with a contrarian fund (this has banks, shorting currencies and lots of gold etc) and put up with under-performance while waiting for the crash it has positioned itself for doesn't happen yet? Or would you stick with it just for diversification?

People who hold a loss-avoiding trust such as Strategic Assets and then sell it just before they need its protective qualities are said to have "capitulated".

I've been tempted to buy it for a while now; I suspect that it can use defensive investments that I don't know how to use. By contrast, I think I might be able to mimic the investments of Personal Assets Trust - another defensive stalwart - myself.
Free the dunston one next time too.

My mum holds this and unlike some funds I haven't made her sell it :)

Littlewood has been short govt bonds in this fund for ages now, having made a good argument for doing so, and its a high conviction position that I find difficult to disagree with, which is a reason to like it. Unfortunately the market so far has meant that a number of the factsheets/ commentaries have had him expressing his condinuing disbelief at high bond prices in certain parts of the world - beginning to sound a bit like a broken record and his moves just haven't paid off for him yet in a significant way.

It is tempting to think he has just lost the plot and the fund should be dumped - especially when he says that their view is that one day the 'flight to safety' will be *away from* bonds and the position will prove to be protective. But I agree it is probably not one to dump just to try to catch the last equity resurgence before the next big crash; mum's ISA account is not one that makes quick market timing moves.

Still, it's not the biggest componenr of her 'lower equities mixed asset' part of the portfolio (that honour goes to Personal Assets mentioned b y kidmugsy above)

My main "safety net" fund is Troy. I have thought that if you are in a bearish mood for a drop soon, it might be the time to buy.

I've had Artemis Strategy Assets in my fund selection (I'm not clever enough to regard it as a portfolio <s>) for 4 years and it has been pretty disappointing and it is one of two earmarked for selling if I need to but will probably give it another year.
HL have just put up a review of it on their website as it one of their promoted (Wealth+) funds.
