What to do before getting extension quotes

we are going through the early stages of getting an extension. We are currently with the architecht who is drawing up plans.

Looking ahead a few weeks to getting quotes from builders (going to get 4 quotes from recommended builders), i have a few questions (having never been through this process before)

1. should i write up a brief exactly what i want to be quoted? i.e. a list of things, and also the rough locations of radiators, and new plug sockets for the kitchen ,etc?

2. What is the best way to avoid getting stung halfway through ,or at the end, with an extra bill?

3. Will most builders sign a contract about a fixed price for the job?

4. Anything else?

thanks for your input
