How soon can holidays be taken?

Hi
My sister in law started a new job and she’s been told she can’t take any paid holidays until she’s been there for four months. She started the job beginning of December and needs two days holiday next week for a funeral but has to to take it as unpaid leave.
I’ve never heard this before? Is it right??
Thanks

It's down to each companies individual policy.0

When you can "take" holiday is a contractual arrangement, "accruing" holiday is a legal requirement. So yes they are correct.0

The employer can dictate when any or all holidays may be taken.0

The company policy may be that you have to accrue a certain amount of holidays before you are eligible to take them. Did your sister in law not mention any pre-existing holiday commitments when she joined the company?0

Thanks for the replies.
She didn’t tell them about pre-existing holidays because it wasn’t pre-existing when she started, it’s for a funeral. Think happy & you'll be happy

If its bereavement leave for an immediate member of family then your sister may be entitled to a paid day off depending on what the definition of "immediate" is in her companys HR policy.0 -
Who's funeral is she attending?
Allowing paid leave for a funeral is up to the individual company and it's usually only for immediate family.
The company have stated their policy and there's nothing to be done to change that.0 -

I've worked with some right crap employers in the past. But fortunately I have always had the choice of when to take my holidays. There will have been times I have had requests turned down due to reasonable business needs, but on the whole I take my holiday when the heck I like.
In some cases I have even been allowed to book the next day off which I thought was very generous altho I'd not try that unless work was quiet. It would really suck if I couldnt choose when to take my time off. It would suck to the point I may turn down a particular job.Sometimes my advice may not be great, but I'm not perfect and I do try my best. Please take this into account.0 -
