    Not allowing paid holiday but allowing unpaid is not a sensible approach for a company, far better to use up the paid holiday liability.

    Possibly. As an opinion. And assuming the person had taken no holidays so far. All of which is a guess because we don't know.

    During the first year of employment, the employer is entitled to refuse the taking of any holiday not accrued. Additionally, the employer may, at any time, refuse requested leave, on the basis that they allow leave to be taken during the relevant leave year.

    I would have thought that it's likely to be unpaid compassionate leave, which is different.

    Unpaid leave is what it is. Surely the point of compassionate leave is its paid compassionately?

    Really? Six weeks into a job, with Christmas and New Year in that period (so paid leave has been taken), and they'd like two more days off. We have no idea about the job, the company, the cover or leave arrangements. They've been told they can have two days unpaid leave for a funeral, which is more than they are entitled to - that being no leave at all. We can't assume anything.

    Would it make a difference of this was a high dependency unit in a hospital and there was no cover available? Or maybe different if it was one of dozens of staff on a production line? Since we don't knowcv we can't decide. But it is what it is.
